Fuck, that hadn’t gone well. Anne made her way down the staircase, unsure of what to do next. She didn’t want to think about Vinny and herself now. She knew something was going on, but she guessed it always had been.

She liked the idea of having male friends—no sexual tension, no flirtation, just mates, and yeah, definitely some feeling, just not in that way. She knew she was kind of unapproachable. She kept people at a distance—and yet, she thought, here I am, just back from shagging a copper.

The drive home took just a few minutes, and she tried not to think about her friend, how hurt and complicated he was. She headed along Princes Avenue, through the gates, then round the park. The tree-lined road with the park on one side and the large Victorian semis on the other felt like somewhere else: not minutes from the city centre, but suburban, peaceful; the light breaking through the overhanging trees dappled the windscreen with shadows. Light and shadow.

She was tired and needed a bath—not a shower today but a bath, a good old soak and the chance to think. She couldn’t get Vinny out of her mind. She was desperate. He was so upset. In her desperation, she also realised how much they meant to each other. Light and shadow.
