CHAPTER TWELVE

Edric

Ellen’s head rested on my shoulder as we linked our hands. It was silent, but that was alright as I replayed the words she said to me earlier, “I love you, Edric; let’s begin and always end there.” I loved her even more, knowing she took my words and held them in her heart. I knew she may not have been ready when I first confessed my feelings, but now those words sealed our commitment, and the moment I heard them tied Ellen to me forever. I was never letting her go, and when I closed my eyes, I saw Ellen and her beautiful eyes looking back at me as I pulled her in for a kiss as we were pronounced husband and wife. It’s a lovely fantasy I intend to make real as soon as possible.

“Edric,” she said my name and then kissed me to bring me back from my daydreaming.

“I’m sorry; what did you say?”

She laughed and then said, “I love you,”

“I love you, and I don’t think I will ever tire of hearing those three words from you.”

“It took me a long time to get here, and after I lost my parents, I thought I would never be able to say those words again. Edric, forgive me for making you wait for something I always felt was real but was too afraid to voice my truth.”

“Baby, I’m here, and I am not going anywhere, I promise you,”

“Edric, you can’t promise me that, and neither could my parents when they said they would return to me. When I watched them board the plane, it was like I knew it would be our last time together, and when I tried to tell them how I felt, Dad just laughed it off and told me not to worry. How could he say that to me when traveling to another dangerous place surrounded by constant threats? I don’t understand it, and I probably never will. And then there’s you, GI Joe, the British version, taking out the bad guys one by one. What makes me believe I’ll be able to hold onto you when I couldn’t with my parents? They died, Edric, and left me all alone.”

GI Joe? Did she call me that? “Wait, hold up,” I said as I turned her around to look at me. “Where did you come up with that?”

“I didn’t, but yes, it’s your new nickname given by Kyle; he thought it suited you.”

“Well, I don’t know about that, and besides, that cartoon character is American, and I’m sure I can come up with something a little more original to best suit me.”

“Thank you for the diversion when our talk was beginning to get serious,” she sighed, got up from the bench, and walked over to the stream's edge where the water met the land. She picked up a few stones and skipped them along the water, and then she sighed again, and I knew she was holding back her tears remembering her parents. “Ugh! I hate crying, and it makes me feel weak and helpless.
