CHAPTER ELEVEN

I-Tee

I know exactly how she feels. I’ve been shut down from field work because I was needed at the comm. Steel has reservations about her right now. He won’t budge until he’s ready. He’ll come around. I believe her.

Once Stack, Cybill and Steel leave, I hand her a laptop.

“Uhm, do you have a notebook and pencil?” she asks.

“You’re going to be working on the computer.”

“I know, but I got this thing. I like to doodle sometimes while I wait. Or make notes.”

Reaching into a drawer I pull out a pad and pen.

“I like pencils better.”

Laughing, I scrounge in another drawer and find her two pencils. “Will this do?”

She nods and takes them from me.

“Do you mind if I dim the lights a little and maybe put on some low music?” I ask.

“Please. That’s how I like it, too.”

I wonder what else we both like. I give myself a mental shake and tap off the mic on my earpiece.

I put her to work running down info on Richard Dean and Tessie Wall as Steel instructed. While I research Percy Longman and Trent Donelle, I also monitor her work. She’s better than I suspected. She goes about things a little differently than I would, but she’s getting solid results. She’s also started her own search on Percy. Everything she’s doing, everything she’s found matches what I’ve located. And she doesn’t leave a trail.

Totally at ease with what she’s doing, she doesn’t need to talk. She plays with the pencil, makes lists which I notice are alternate searches, doodles with lines and circles and sometimes draws cartoon characters. One is an anime girl with a braid and a pulsing heart.

“Lucas, I just thought of something else. I think Percy’s step-dad may have bought another bar when he moved to DC. When Bill transferred back here to work, he would go to DC to visit Percy on a regular basis. I think he mentioned it once while he was still living with Emmi and I.”

“Put a hold on Dean and Wall for now. Keep after Percy and his step dad.”

Her eyes go wide. “You knew what I was doing?”

“Yeah. You did exactly what I would have done. Your work is good. You’re going to be a real asset.”

The smile she gives me is like an explosion of light, as if I told her she won the lottery. I felt the same way the first time Jed praised me after I detected incorrect info on a mission. She is so my type.

Having another geek beside me to lighten the load feels incredible. Having it be someone who likes bikes and seems real is like— well, winning the lottery.

I send Steel an update.

Hours later I see her roll her shoulders for the fifth time and glance at the clock. It’s after midnight. I should take her back to the room so she can get some rest. “Wrap it up. We need a break.”

She turns pleading blue eyes on me. “No. Please. Just a little more. I think I found the name of his step dad and I’m close to the bar name in DC.
