CHAPTER ELEVEN
I-Tee
I know exactly how she feels. Iâve been shut down from field work because I was needed at the comm. Steel has reservations about her right now. He wonât budge until heâs ready. Heâll come around. I believe her.
Once Stack, Cybill and Steel leave, I hand her a laptop.
âUhm, do you have a notebook and pencil?â she asks.
âYouâre going to be working on the computer.â
âI know, but I got this thing. I like to doodle sometimes while I wait. Or make notes.â
Reaching into a drawer I pull out a pad and pen.
âI like pencils better.â
Laughing, I scrounge in another drawer and find her two pencils. âWill this do?â
She nods and takes them from me.
âDo you mind if I dim the lights a little and maybe put on some low music?â I ask.
âPlease. Thatâs how I like it, too.â
I wonder what else we both like. I give myself a mental shake and tap off the mic on my earpiece.
I put her to work running down info on Richard Dean and Tessie Wall as Steel instructed. While I research Percy Longman and Trent Donelle, I also monitor her work. Sheâs better than I suspected. She goes about things a little differently than I would, but sheâs getting solid results. Sheâs also started her own search on Percy. Everything sheâs doing, everything sheâs found matches what Iâve located. And she doesnât leave a trail.
Totally at ease with what sheâs doing, she doesnât need to talk. She plays with the pencil, makes lists which I notice are alternate searches, doodles with lines and circles and sometimes draws cartoon characters. One is an anime girl with a braid and a pulsing heart.
âLucas, I just thought of something else. I think Percyâs step-dad may have bought another bar when he moved to DC. When Bill transferred back here to work, he would go to DC to visit Percy on a regular basis. I think he mentioned it once while he was still living with Emmi and I.â
âPut a hold on Dean and Wall for now. Keep after Percy and his step dad.â
Her eyes go wide. âYou knew what I was doing?â
âYeah. You did exactly what I would have done. Your work is good. Youâre going to be a real asset.â
The smile she gives me is like an explosion of light, as if I told her she won the lottery. I felt the same way the first time Jed praised me after I detected incorrect info on a mission. She is so my type.
Having another geek beside me to lighten the load feels incredible. Having it be someone who likes bikes and seems real is likeâ well, winning the lottery.
I send Steel an update.
Hours later I see her roll her shoulders for the fifth time and glance at the clock. Itâs after midnight. I should take her back to the room so she can get some rest. âWrap it up. We need a break.â
She turns pleading blue eyes on me. âNo. Please. Just a little more. I think I found the name of his step dad and Iâm close to the bar name in DC.
