Asher, in wolf form, stood at least 4 feet tall with the tip of his ears reaching my shoulder. He was even more intimidating in this form as he was in human form. My brain was firing off questions quicker than I could put words to them.
âCan you still hear me? And understand me?â I asked in shock.
His nostrils flared with a hot breath as he bowed his head in a subtle nod.
âOkay,â I nodded. âWow. Iâ¦I donât know what to say.â
He circled the fire a few times before disappearing into the darkness to hunt. I tried to think clearly, to pretend like everything was fine and normal. But nothing would ever be normal again after what I had witnessed. The shock of seeing my own hands heal his wounds after the crash was a big enough of a miracle to wrap my head around. Now this.
I stood cluelessly for a moment, then set my attention to setting up the stove over the fire. I thought maybe if I kept busy, I could calm my nerves.
Once the memory of what I saw had a few minutes to sink in, I realized I wasnât so much afraid of Asherâeven after seeing him transform into a majestic wolf creature. I had never really been afraid of him, even if I had every reason to be. Some part of me knew I could trust him from the very beginning. Thatâs how I had been able to stand up to him in the first place.
He came back a short while later with a big rabbit hanging from his mouth. After he set it on the ground by the fire, I was amazed all over again to see him transition back into human form just as easily as he had turned into a wolf.
I sat in silence, studying him, as he set the rabbit up to cook over the flames. Something was shifting inside of me too. I felt a strange warm buzz over Asher now. I had always been so strong and independent, but something felt good about being in his care. He was a good protector, and I had never felt so safe with anyone before. Maybe that was another reason why I thought we could pull this journey off. I knew he would come, and when he did, nothing bad could happen to me.
But I wasnât about to admit any of that to him. We had been at each otherâs throats the whole trip. Just because watching him shift planted the seed of some kind of crush on him, or what felt like one anyways, didnât mean I was going to give him any ammunition against me. And his ego certainly didnât need another boost.
I decided to keep my feelings to myself, clinging to the reminder that there were plenty of fully human men back in New York that I could just as easily fall for. This thing that was growing between us meant nothing. And if it meant anything at all, that would change after we finished our journey and completed the ritual.
