CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Ryan!” Amy yelled as the taillights of the pickup truck lit up the trailer’s outer wall and driveway in a grim red hue. She sprinted across the dry grass and gravel as the truck engine revved and took off.

The pickup was headed straight for a chain link fence at the back of the tiny yard, and a moment later the truck was bulldozing right through it.

Amy saw her partner scrambling uncertainly to his feet out of the corner of her eye as she ran after the truck. He was still alive, thank god, but Kevin was about to escape.

She didn’t have time to overthink or make a decision. There was only one thing to do.

Amy stopped dead in her tracks and lifted her gun. Her heart was pounding, but suddenly her mind went calm and cool as she aligned the bead of her sights with the red tail light of the fleeing truck.

She dropped her aim just a hair, took one deep breath, and pulled the trigger.

The bang of the tire exploding was audible from the yard.

The truck veered suddenly as the tire went out, colliding with a tree on the other side of the now-ruined chain-link fence. Smoke was billowing from the hood of the truck in voluminous clouds.

Amy mind was locked in laser sharp focus. She sprinted in the direction of the truck. She heard Stone say “nice shot” somewhere behind her as she ran, but she didn’t register the compliment in her conscience mind. She was focused on a singular objective: apprehend Kevin.

Through the billows of smoke and steam that ushered from the crashed pickup, Amy saw the cabin door fly open. The bulky figure of Kevin stumbled out from the driver’s side and began to flee in the direction of the open field beyond.

Running as hard as she could, Amy sprinted the thirty yards between her and the crashed truck. Kevin was running away, but he wasn’t swift. She gained steadily on him, heard him panting and swearing as they ran through the knee-high grass of the vacant lot behind the trailer park.

In a ferocious moment of tumbling chaos, Amy found herself wrapping her arms around Kevin’s knees. The large man lost his balance fell sideways, rolling heavily over Amy's chest and diaphragm as he fell, knocking the wind out of her. For an instant, she saw pop rocket stars and gasped for breath that wouldn’t come.

Before she’d regained her wind, she was clambering back up and wrestling Kevin Weis’s arms behind his back.

“Get off me, you crazy ranger bitch!” Kevin screamed, his face pressed into the dirt as Amy got the steel handcuffs out of her belt and pinioned the man’s wrists.

“That kind of language isn’t going to get you anywhere,” Amy said, locking the bracelets and getting off the large man. She was still gasping for breath, and the words came out as a hoarse croak.

“Hot damn, Amy!” Special Agent Stone hooted like owlish cowboy as he ran up behind them, his gun still drawn.
