A giddy smile lifted Skye’s face as she read the email from her client’s book-publishing friend. Eloise had loved the sample images Skye had sent of the Hammonds’ ranch and had given her the go ahead to gather the photos she wanted to use, suggesting the book focus specifically on the Lazy H Ranch. Eloise wrote, Let’s call it “Modern Traditions: Keeping the Traditions of Montana Ranching Alive” or something along those lines. Skye briefly wondered how the Hammonds would feel about having their ranch featured in the book. They’d given her permission to take as many photographs as she wanted and to use them, but that was a little different than having their ranch spotlighted. She made a note to ask Aaron on their date this evening.

She opened the next email. It was from her assistant, detailing the goings-on back home with the business. Skye’s mouth fell open. Twenty-five clients for senior pictures and twelve weddings to schedule? As she continued down the list of requests Joel had sent her, the realization hit her that she needed to take a trip back to Washington to deal with it all. Really, she should probably just end her vacation and head home early, but she wasn’t ready to leave Northstar. More to the point, she wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Aaron and Jessie. He was patient and compassionate, laid-back and charming, and the exact opposite of Darren. What if she was only falling for him because he was so different from her ex?

She snorted. There was no use denying that she was falling for him, but what if the novelty wore off and nothing remained to fill the void?

In that case, a trip to Washington to deal with her business might be a good thing. It would give her time to clear her head a little, to ponder what she felt for Aaron without being distracted by him. If she were honest with herself, the fear that she was plunging ahead too quickly was very real. For the first time in her life, she was free to do as she pleased—more importantly, she was free to rediscover herself—and the last thing she wanted to do was jump into another serious relationship before she was ready.

Skye stood and wandered out into the kitchen. With a twist of her lips, she pushed through the screen door Aaron had fixed only yesterday and stood on the ramp just outside. The inch of snow that had fallen in the valley
