CHAPTER ELEVEN
Gollie glided along the ground in long, loping strides. Jack marveled at his speed. Believing in magic had brought so many wonderful experiences to him, experiences he could share with only a few. Looking up at the growing light in the sky, he shivered and turned to Karna. âWe donât have much time.â
The tiger-lion lengthened his stride and they moved beyond the fields to the far side of the mountain and to the edge of the Bogg. Gollie slowed his steps and crouched on the ground so Jack and Karna could easily climb off.
Jack adjusted his backpack on his shoulder and gave Gollie a grateful pat on the head. The tiger rubbed his ears against Jackâs hands and let out a sound of contentment.
Karna hugged Gollie and turned to Jack. âReady?â
Jack nodded and in a flash of green, Karna turned into a Heklar-like creature. Jack climbed aboard and waved to Gollie.
Jack crouched low on Karnaâs shoulders, hoping it would make her load seem lighter. He wished he had the ability to change shape. Then he could carry others on his back. As it was, he had to trust that sheâd told him the truth about being able to make the trip back to the fortress. If not, theyâd land in the water. He knew very well what would happen to them then.
The horizon showed ominous streaks of light. They flew quietly toward the back side of the fortress. Jack was beginning to think they might make it when an angry cry erupted behind them. He whipped around and screamed. A large, yellow flying creature, like a giant, weird-looking canary, headed right toward them. It opened its curved orange beak, exposing sharp teeth.
The beat of Karnaâs wings wavered.
âKeep steady,â Jack warned Karna. âIâll take care of this.â
Heart pounding, trying not to look at the bubbling water below them, Jack waited until the bird was almost upon him. Then he swung his backpack as hard as he could. The blue canvas bag hit the flying creatureâs beak with a snapping sound that echoed in the air. Teeth flew past Jackâs head. The bird let out a muffled cry and fell, brushing its heavy wings against Karna, sending them flying off course.
Karna fluttered her wings helplessly. She dropped lower. One of her wings swiped the surface of the water. Light glittered as the orange critters swarmed to the area looking for something to eat.
âUp!â Jack cried, tugging on her neck, wishing words alone could make it happen.
The yellow bird flew at them once more, then like a popped balloon, dropped into the swampy Bogg near them. The water bubbled with activity. Flashing lights shimmered. Within moments, the only sign of the bird was a single yellow feather floating on the water.
Slowly, inch by inch, Karna rose in the air.
The fortress loomed ahead of them. All seemed quiet. As quietly as possible, they landed on the window sill at the small room in the back. Drawing a deep breath of air, steadying his nerves, Jack peeked inside.
