ORESTES

A POEM BY YANNIS RITSOS

Translated by Gwendolyn MacEwen and Nikos Tsingos

(Two young men, around twenty, stopped at the Propylaea with an air about them as though they were trying to remember or recognize something, even though everything was incredibly familiar and moving, though somewhat smaller – much smaller – than they had thought when they had been in exile, in another land, in another time – even the walls seemed much smaller, the enormous stones and the Lions’ Gate, and the palace under the shadow of the mountain. Early summer. Night is falling. The private cars and big excursion buses have gone. In the quiet, the place breathes a deep ahh from the mouths of the ancient graves and memories. A piece of newspaper stirs on the burnt grass, blown by some vague breath. The night-watchman’s steps are heard, and the big key closing the inner door of the castle. Then, as though released by the warm coolness of the night, the crickets beat their tiny drums. Somewhere, from behind the mountain, an uncertain brightness slinks – perhaps the moon. And at exactly the same moment, the sharp, rough wailing of a woman is heard from the stone stairway. The two men don’t look at one another. They merge with the outer wall like two great shadows. After a time, one of them dabs the sweat from his brow with his scarf, points with a limp finger in the direction of the sound and speaks to his companion, who stands by, ever affectionately silent and devoted, like Pylades:)
