Chapter Sixteen

At first Sam wasn’t sure what Sarah was talking about. Had he said something to upset her? He shouldn’t have been so specific as far as telling her what had happened to Tommy, and he was sorry he hadn’t thought of that sooner. But what she was saying didn’t make sense.

“I was there that night. I was the one who left him. It was me.”

That couldn’t be true. She wouldn’t have had any business on the Cliff Walk, a girl of her class, at night, with a boy like Tommy. Someone would have been watching her at all times, a maid probably, even if Sarah had wanted to go out by herself.

He hurried around the desk and tried to take her arm, but she moved away, so he stopped where he was, silently waiting for her to continue.

“What’s wrong? Did something happen?”

Arthur was suddenly at Sam’s side, and while Sam knew he hadn’t done anything wrong, he felt somehow responsible for whatever was causing Sarah distress.

“We were talking, and I think I said something to upset her. I’m sorry, if that makes any difference.”

Arthur moved in front of Sam towards Sarah, but she took a hand from her face and held it in front of her, letting her other hand fall to her waist. She wrapped it around herself tightly before she spoke, taking a deep breath as if she was trying to compose herself.

“No, Sam. I’m sorry, but this isn’t about me. I’ve been crying and feeling sorry for myself for feeling so guilty, but it’s nothing compared to what you and your mother are suffering. He fell while I was with him, and I panicked. I left him alone and went home, and never told anyone.”

Sam realized that he was shaking his head, because what she was saying could not be true. He couldn’t let it be true. This beautiful, hard-working, selfless girl who had been doing all she could to find a way to help at the shelter, who had expressed such genuine sympathy with his revelation about his family, could not be someone who abandoned a boy who, if he wasn’t already lost, was dying.

“What are you talking about, Sarah?”

Arthur never raised his voice, but it was louder now than Sam had ever heard it, and Sam was too stunned to respond to what Sarah had said. Why would she say this if it wasn’t true?

“During the New Year’s Eve ball, I left and met some people at the Cliff Walk. I’ve done it before, but I didn’t know them all that well. One of them . . .”

She looked over at Sam now, and he knew for certain that she was telling the truth.

“Sam’s brother. He had his hands on me, and I pulled them away, but then he slipped. My back was to him, so I didn’t see it happen, but the other girls grabbed me so I wouldn’t fall, too. I just . . . we didn’t know what to do. I hardly remember coming back home.
