Chapter 5

A Graveyard of Global Waste

Imagine townspeople not only living with garbage but practically living in garbage. That’s what US author Roma Eisenstark saw when she traveled to China in 2015 to work as an English teacher in a small rural village in China’s Hebei Province. The village is a three-hour drive from Beijing, China’s capital, and is surrounded by farm fields, rivers, marshes, and lakes. But it is also practically submerged in garbage. According to Eisenstark, the town’s roadsides, riverbanks, and lakeshores are littered with “heaps of plastic cups, candy wrappers, napkins, and an endless multitude of plastic bags . . . in every possible size, shape, and color . . . old sandals, hairbrushes, broken children’s toys, sweaters.”
