Chapter 6

"He kissed you?" Jasmine's voice was a mix of shock and concern as she leaned forward on her couch, her eyes wide as she regarded her friend. Eliza noticed the couch's faint smell of floral perfume, perhaps a lingering aroma from Jasmine's latest date, mixed with the musky scent of her dog who often claimed the couch as his own.

Eliza nodded, a blush creeping up her cheeks. "I know it sounds crazy. He's... he's not like anyone I've ever met, Jas."

"Yeah," agreed Jasmine. "He's fifteen years older, for starters." She stood up. "Can I get you something?"

Eliza shook her head. "Why should that matter?"

Jasmine walked into her kitchen, tossing a reply over her shoulder. "Girl, you need me to answer that for you?"

Eliza sighed.

Jasmine returned with two bottles of water and handed one to her friend. As she sat, her expression turned serious. "Eliza, remember how things ended with Mark? And then with Derek? You fall hard and fast, and it usually ends up messy. And this guy is the mayor. It's not just about age."

Eliza sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I know, I know. It's completely unprofessional. I'm planning to ask for a reassignment. But, Jasmine, there’s more to it."

"What do you mean?" Jasmine’s tone softened, sensing her friend’s distress.

Eliza recounted her meeting with Charles Easton, watching Jasmine’s face darken with each word. "He practically oozed sleaze. He made these insinuations about Nathan, and then he... he looked at me like I was just another piece in his power games."

"That's disgusting, Eliza. You shouldn't have to deal with that kind of harassment," Jasmine said firmly.

"But that's just it, Jas," Eliza leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper. "There's something rotten in this town. Easton's at the center of it, I'm sure. And Nathan... he's caught up in all this. I can't just walk away."

Jasmine took a moment, her gaze thoughtful. "Eliza, you're a great reporter. You have a chance to expose whatever Easton is up to. But if you're involved with Nathan, it complicates things. You can be his ally, or you can be a reporter for the Gazette. But you can’t be both."

Eliza's shoulders slumped slightly. Jasmine’s words echoed her own internal conflict. She was torn between her growing feelings for Nathan and her commitment to her career and the truth.

"Maybe I'm trying to have it both ways," Eliza admitted, a note of resignation in her voice.

Jasmine reached out, taking Eliza's hand in hers. "You're my friend, Eliza, and I support you no matter what. But you need to think this through. Go slow. Figure out what you really want, and what you're willing to risk for it."

Eliza nodded, a grateful smile touching her lips. Jasmine always had a way of bringing clarity to her chaos.

As she left Jasmine’s cozy apartment, Eliza felt the weight of her friend’s advice. The road ahead was fraught with complications, but she knew one thing for sure – she couldn’t ignore the pull she felt towards Nathan, nor could she turn a blind eye to the shadows lurking in Maplewood.
