Chapter 21

Isaac was up early as usual. Ren was struggling to shut off his alarm, as he was dealing with jet lag. “It is only 3:30 a.m. back home. This stinks,” Ren complained as Isaac got ready. “Come on, first day of practice,” Isaac said gleefully. “Whatever,” Ren replied as he crawled out of bed. They headed down the hall to the shared bathrooms to get ready. Next, it was time for a quick breakfast and then off to the training facilities. As they walked out of the residence hall, Isaac walked toward his bike, which was locked in the bike rack still. “You do have a bicycle,” Ren said with a laugh. “Yes, it will help me get around campus. Each building has a bike rack, but they don’t all have parking lots,” Isaac shared. “Whatever,” Ren replied as he headed toward his shiny new ride. Isaac and his bicycle headed off down Beach Ave first, but soon Ren went blowing past him in his car. Ren giggled as he passed his roommate. Both were at the training facility by half past six. Coach Tomkins met them as they walked in. “You must be Ren and Isaac. Welcome to your first day. Coach Williams asked me to work with both of you to get you up to speed. You will quickly learn that we stress training your bodies and your minds. You will be pushed to new levels. It will not be easy, but we have learned that putting the work in now will prepare you for the later parts of games. As you know, football games are often a war of attrition. Whichever team has the most tools at the end normally wins. We strive to be that team. Okay, let’s get started. First, you can warm up with running fifteen laps, and then we will get started.” As they started to run, it became obvious to both Isaac and Ren that they were competitive and would be challenging each other. As they started lap twelve, Ren was regretting the last two pancakes that he had this morning. That was a bad decision, he told himself. Finally, lap fifteen came and went as both young men pushed to the finish line, trying to beat the other one there. Coach Tomkins smiled to himself. Yep, these boys are here to play, he thought to himself. “Okay, good. Now that you are warmed up, we can get started. So you are both about four months behind the rest of the team. We started spring practices back in February, so understand that you will need to catch up. Know that we will work with you. When you are ready, you will join the rest of the team in two-a-day practices. Today, I need to see where you are at and how much work we have to do,” Coach Tomkins explained. For the next hour, Coach Tomkins led them through a series of sprints and agility drills. He gave them a short break to get a drink, and then they were back at it.
