Chapter FOURTEEN

Tori watched her partner arrive, still tense by the garage door's opening. The wail of the ambulance was a grim serenade as Javi's sedan skidded to a stop on the rain-slicked curb. He killed the engine, and in that momentary silence, the downpour seemed to hesitate, as if catching its breath before continuing its relentless assault on the city.

"Saunders?" Javi inquired curtly, though he already knew the answer from the grim set of the nearest paramedic's jaw.

"Too late," was the simple, weighted reply from Tori.

"Understood." Javi cut him off, not out of disrespect but out of necessity—the urgency of protocol overrode the luxury of grief or shock. He motioned to Tori, and together they moved towards the house, the scene playing out like a déjà vu of every other tragedy they had encountered in their line of work.

Tori's heart clenched, not just for April Saunders, but for the all-too-familiar dance with mortality that she and Javi knew too well. Loss was an old acquaintance, its sting less sharp over time, but never entirely dulled.

Without missing a beat, Javi made his way to the side of the house, his trained eyes scanning for the power box even through the veil of rain. Finding it, he didn't hesitate. He flipped the cover open and threw the main breaker with a decisive snap, plunging the house into darkness—a necessary void to ensure no more lives would be claimed by whatever unseen current still might flow through the veins of the home.

"Power's out!" Javi called back to Tori, his voice barely audible over the drumming rain.

Tori acknowledged, her eyes not leaving the house as she pulled her flashlight from her belt and clicked it on. The beam pierced the darkness, slicing through the tension as they prepared to step into the unknown.

Together, they turned to face the house, the storm's fury a mere backdrop to the grim tableau awaiting them inside. They each drew a steadying breath, ready to peel back the layers of mystery enshrouding April Saunders' untimely demise.

A static crackle from the radio clipped to Javi's belt interrupted the sound of rainfall. "Control to unit two, confirming power shutdown complete for Saunders residence. Proceed with caution."

"Copy that," Javi responded, his thumb pressing the talk button as he looked at Tori. The confirmation was a formality, but it also underscored the gravity of the situation; someone had tampered with the electrics, converting a suburban home into a deadly trap.

With a nod, they stepped over the threshold into the silent interior. Their flashlights swept across the living room, revealing nothing amiss—a sofa with indented cushions, a coffee table adorned with magazines, a television remote lying innocuously on the armrest. It was a snapshot of domesticity frozen in time, betrayed by the tragedy they knew lurked just beyond.

Tori's breath was a steady rhythm, but her pulse thrummed with the adrenaline of the hunt. Every sense was attuned to the search—what did the killer touch, what did they leave behind, what shadow did they cast
