Sixteen

It took Tim all he had not to speed once he was on the road. He passed two police cruisers hauling ass the other way, lights flashing and sirens screaming. He watched them fade away in his side mirror. Feeling at the spot on the left side of his chest where the bullet had hit him, he counted himself lucky. It would be a hell of a bruise, but not much more. Maybe a cracked rib.

Joe was probably dead from his leg wounds, and Ray was dead. It was a clusterfuck like he’d never seen. How had the guy known they were coming? No one is that fast. He kept replaying it in his head as he drove. Sure, he and Joe had pulled their guns out when they walked into the place, but the guy was reacting even before they raised them. He had to have known they were coming. But how?

It took Tim twenty minutes to get to the house. Twenty minutes of replaying the whole thing over and over. Seeing Joe get shot and then Ray, over and over. He grew more and more angry as the minutes ticked by, and the only thing that made him feel better was the thought of finding the biker and his girlfriend and making him watch as he took his time with the girl. Then he would take care of the biker with a bullet in each leg and one in the head.

As he pulled into the driveway, he glanced over at the passenger seat and smiled. The girl’s purse sat there. It was all he needed to find them.

He grabbed the purse and jumped out of the car, running up to bang on the mansion’s door.

“Who the fuck is that guy?” Tim yelled at his boss, who opened the door with a smile on his face. A smile that faltered immediately.

“Calm down, Tim. Come inside and we’ll talk about it.”

Boss wasn’t the best word for what Diego was to Tim. More like a commander or a shot caller. But Tim just thought of him as Diego. They had come up together, Diego, Tim, and Joe. The three musketeers of petty crime in Denver. But things had changed, and quickly, when Diego spearheaded a kind of cartel franchise opportunity here in Denver.

Tim walked into the mansion and straight to the kitchen. He dropped Katrina’s purse on the counter, grabbed a can of beer out of the fridge, popped it open, then leaned back on the counter by the oversize fridge and took a deep breath before going to work on the beer.

“What happened?” Diego asked. “Where’s Ray and Joe?”

“Ray’s fucking dead. Probably Joe, too. The guy knew we were coming. No one’s that quick. No one.”

“What?” Diego looked crestfallen. Joe had been his friend since high school, and Ray he had known for several years.

“Who the fuck is this guy? Why do they want him so bad?”

Diego had a faraway look in his eyes as he came to terms with what he’d just been told.
