Chapter 15
Ava
I loved Hannah, but I legit thought she was out of her mind. During our double date, she pulled me aside to sit on the swings while Nolan and Seth hung out at the picnic table. (Liam had gone to his car a while ago, probably to escape being a fifth wheel.) While we pumped our legs up and down, Hannah started selling me on the idea of going out with Nolan again.
âIsnât Nolan sweet?â Hannahâs red hair whipped around her face as she swung back and forth. âI think you guys get along so well. We should totally double date again.â
I tucked my own hair behind my ears to keep it from flying into my mouth, which had just dropped wide open. âHan, heâs hung up on another girl. Didnât you hear him talking about her the whole time we were eating froyo?â
âBut you guys had a connection. He really liked the advice you gave him, which to be honest, was a little too helpful. Itâs like you want him to date Mimi instead of you.â
âThatâs because I do, and he does, too.â I rolled my eyes. âHeâs not interested in me, which is totally fine. You can stop trying so hard to get us together.â
Hannah sighed, then slowed her swinging until her feet touched the ground. I came to a stop, too, and shifted in my swing to face her. Her brows furrowed as she got a really intense look about her. âIâm worried about you, Ava.â
âWorried?â Different emotions flickered across her face, but the one that stood out the most was pity, which didnât make sense to me. I had no idea what was going on inside her brain, and it was making me worried. âWhat for?â
She took a deep breath as she played with the hem of her blue sweater. âI know we havenât been spending as much time together since I started dating Seth, and I feel really bad about that. I didnât mean to neglect our friendship. Iâm so sorry.â
âHey, itâs okay. I get it. Youâre in a new relationship, so it makes sense that youâd want to spend every waking minute with your boyfriend. Iâd be worried if you didnât.â
Hannah smiled gratefully. âThanks, Aves, for understanding. Youâre the best. Butââ she let out a heavy breath ââI shouldâve realized youâd be lonely. I just didnât think youâd get desperate.â
âHuh?â I was super confused now, especially when Hannah turned to glance across the street. I followed her gaze and saw it land on Liamâs car that was parked next to the froyo shop. From where we sat, I could make out his profile in the driverâs seat where he was talking on the phone. Hannah looked back at me, her blue eyes darkening with concern. I dug my sneakers into the sand underneath my feet and leaned toward her. âWhat are you talking about?â
âSeth noticed it first and when he told me, I didnât believe him. But Iâve been noticing little signs lately, here and there, and I think he might be right.
