The next day, Double M and Charlotte were waiting for the couple in the same GUILE meeting room, the map of Argentina again spread out on the table. Double M wore a dark gray pristine pinstripe, Charlotte a light blue blouse and navy slacks coincidentally echoing Stacey’s similar attire in pink and red. Anticipating travel, Sand was in a Brooks Brothers sports jacket, Ban-Lon shirt and Sansabelt slacks in tones of brown.

Using a wooden pointer, Double M said, “There’s a good reason why it took so long to find this damned clinic. We assumed it was near Bariloche when it’s halfway between Von Koerber’s estate and there. Middle of nowhere, actually. John, if you hadn’t learned of the estate and advised Charlotte where to look, we might still be beating the bullrushes for the blasted thing.”

“We go today?” Sand asked.

Marbury shook his head. “No. You need detailed briefing in preparation for what lies ahead.”

Twenty-some hours passed before the three agents took off for Buenos Aires, and another two days passed before they landed in the capital of Argentina, where local GUILE agent, Jaime, met them on the tarmac. He wore the same navy-blue suit he’d been wearing when Sand saw first him in the bullet-proof glass box where the young man had been eating a Bauru sandwich.

Sand shook hands with the agent, who before had always been seated at the watchdog desk. Turned out Jaime was almost as tall as Sand, if rail thin. His mahogany skin had a glow in the bright sunlight, his black hair noticeably longer with a wispy mustache and beard added, the rewards of time in the timberland.

As they headed into the airport, Sand said, “I understand you collected all that intel for us about the clinic.”

The young man grinned shyly. “Yes, sir.”

“And here I assumed you weren’t rip enough for field work.”

“People underestimate me because of my age, Mr. Sand. It can be an advantage.”

“Well, use it as long as you can. Ready to take us in country?”

“We should change first. It is an arduous trip up into the mountains.”

He drove them to the shabby brick facade of the Buenos Aires GUILE office and, when they reemerged, all four were wearing fatigues and combat boots. The first leg of their journey would be via a Jeep waiting in the modest parking lot. Jaime drove, Sand took the passenger seat, and the two women snugged in back. The trip was almost sixteen hundred kilometers, good road starting out, ever less so as they went.

As they started out, Jaime filled them in on the layout of the grounds of the clinic.

“There is something,” the young agent added, obviously uneasy, “we did not anticipate.”

“What’s that?” Sand asked.

Dark eyebrows rose and lowered. “There was talk of ‘shadow people’ in the hills. The doctor...he did things to these people.”

Sand frowned. “What sort of things?”

“No one would say, nothing definido...but they speak in hushed tones as you would of the very sick...or the dead.” He shivered in the heat. “Fue muy aterrador.
