Chapter 47

The sun had fully set, the icy claws of cold, fall wind raking at his cheeks, exploiting the thin fabric of his slacks as if they were a lace negligee by the time Erik found himself in the neighborhood where Kelsey’s studio was. The hidden lines of one neighborhood into the next couldn’t have been starker. On one side of the road, a little everyday discarded trash gathered in the gutter, whereas when Erik set foot on the opposite sidewalk, the ripe scent of unwashed bodies cascaded down the opening of a nearby alleyway. He’d been so enthralled with his own worries, scanning faces and keeping up with Kelsey’s questions that he hadn’t noticed the barred windows, the cracked stoops leading out from rundown buildings, the overflowing trash cans.

Erik shuffled by the prone bodies of homeless men and women hidden under layers of blankets and clothes, their worldly possessions gathered in a shopping cart just within arm’s reach. Soft snores were like a sad symphony resonating from the benches and gutters, stoops and walkways. Erik hoped Kelsey was never at her studio after the sun went down. As Jeffrey had warned him, the neighborhood was rough. Thoughts of Jeffrey warred with memories of his afternoon with Kelsey, creating a jumble of emotions that vied for Erik’s attention.

He shook it off and turned his attention outward. As Erik pressed deeper into the neighborhood, the more his surroundings began to change. From the homeless to the restless, as groups of people began to pop up, jamming the front steps of apartment buildings, smoking cigarettes crowded around benches. The sounds were at odds with the dilapidated buildings. The people laughed and joked, sang, played music. It was like some strange night club unrestrained by brick and mortar. If anyone paid him any mind, they didn’t voice it as he glided silently by, his hood pulled over his eyes, his hands jammed into his hoodie pockets.

Erik continued his solemn trek through the city he’d never known, his eyes scanning the buildings, hoping to find the landmarks he was seeking, something that told him he was close. He stopped on the corner of a four-way stop and gazed up at one of the buildings; the sign running along its side immediately familiar to him. The Sydney, in its glittering gold lettering. It was a sign that promised so much more than the building offered, Erik had no doubt. He could hear Kelsey’s musical laughter as he walked by, a smile turning the corners of his mouth.

“You lost?” Growled a deep voice, bringing Erik out of his reverie.

Erik snapped back into himself and found a group of men standing just off to the side of the dirty concrete sidewalk. Erik’s eyes scanned the grim faces, not sure who’d asked the question.

“What you looking at, bitch?” One of them called out to Erik.

Erik lifted his hands up in response and shuffled backwards a step, keeping his tongue still while he did his best impression of a junkie.
