THE air in the bathroom was dense with steam and perfumed like Irish Spring.
Adam could barely keep his eyes open while Ean dried him off.
âI feel like shit.â
Ean ran the towel over his foot. âItâs because youâre getting close.â
Yeah, Adam kind of figured that. âWhy am I so tired?â
âYouâve burned up a lot of calories.â And Ean didnât have to elaborate on how. Parts of Adamâs body still ached enough to remind him, but in a feel-good way, a way that made him want to do it all over again. Ean ran the terrycloth over Adamâs legs one last time. He stood up and snagged a pair of jeans off the cockeyed sink and handed them over. They were the ones Adam had worn yesterday; the shirt Ean passed him was different. Adam didnât bother to remind Ean that he needed boxers.
Adam stayed sitting on the toilet lid while Ean pulled on his blue jeans and nothing else.
Ean said, âIâm going to go down the road to the pay phone and call Batu.â
âThen what?â
âI think you need to come back to the apartment with me.â
Adam sighed and closed his eyes.
âAdamâ¦.â Ean was right in front of him now, and Adam hadnât even heard him move.
âWhat?â
âItâs for the best.â
The best. âIâm scared.â
âDonât be.â
âI canât help it.â Adam looked at Ean then. His hazel eyes were so bold, fierce. God, Adam wished he had half Eanâs courage. Ean would never be afraid of going through a Shift. Hell, heâd be out in the street celebrating. Once upon a time, the idea had held some sort of appeal for Adam too. That is, until heâd met Jerry.
The manâs face had haunted Adamâs nightmares for months afterward. Sometimes it still haunted him.
Ean cupped his chin. âStop worrying. I told you a thousand times, Iâll take care of you.â
âTen thousand,â Adam corrected.
Ean grinned. âTen thousand.â
âMaybe more.â
âYeah, probably more.â
Adam leaned forward and caught Eanâs mouth.
âIâm not very good at this,â Ean said against his lips.
Adam nodded. âMe either. Thatâs why weâre practicing.â He promptly swallowed whatever it was Ean said next. Eanâs hands slipped into Adamâs wet locks, gripping him tight, pulling him closer. He said something else, and Adam swallowed that too.
âPhoneâ¦.â Ean pulled away. âIâve got to call Batuâ¦.â But he didnât want to. No, what Ean would rather be doing showed loud and clear on his face. âIâll be back in an hour.â He opened the bathroom door and walked into the bedroom.
Adam yanked on his jeans and followed. âWhy so long?â
âIâm going to get you some food.â
âIâve got some.â
âYouâve got junk. You need meat.â
âThen let me get you some money.â Adam went for his wallet on the bedside table. Ean stopped him.
âNo. Iâll pay for it.â
âButâ¦.â The look Ean shot him made Adam snap his mouth shut. âOkay.â He scrubbed a hand through his hair and pushed back his bangs. Ean caught his hand.
âIâll hurry.â
âThen what?â
âWe go to the apartment.â Adam almost told him to take his time. He didnât want to go.
