I hopped onto Reese’s bed to watch her get ready for her blind date tonight. I loved hanging out in her room. And I loved watching her get ready for dates. She treated me like I was one of her girlfriends and not an annoying little sister she wished would get out of her bedroom like most older sisters would have. She was so pretty, with her petite figure and perfect shiny hair. Sometimes I thought she should move to Hollywood to try to be an actress. But then I’d miss her, so I was glad she stayed on this coast.

“So, do you know anything about this guy?” I asked her.

“Only that he graduated from Boston University and works for the same accounting firm that my friend Darren works at.”

Ah, Darren. I liked him. Reese had dated him for a while, but they’d ended up splitting amicably and had actually continued to be good friends throughout the years. I always secretly wished they’d get back together.

“Do you know where he’s taking you?” I asked, wanting details. She always had a new date.

“No. And it’s stressing me out. I have no idea if I should dress casual or fancy myself up a bit.”

“Wear a dress.” I repositioned myself on her bed, getting comfortable while she stood from her vanity and walked over to her closet.

“You think?” She slid the hangers from left to right, looking through the clothes she had to choose from.

“Definitely. It’s New Year’s Eve. Everyone dresses up on New Year’s Eve.”

“I suppose you’re probably right. I just wish I knew where he was taking me so I could be sure.” She sighed. “What about you? Big plans for tonight?”

I rolled my eyes at her. “Oh, yeah. Huge,” I replied sarcastically. “Scarlet’s parents are out of town, so we’re all going to hang out there.”

“And do what? Is she having a party?” She seemed to be asking out of curiosity, not judgment. Reese had always been cool. I could always talk to her much more openly than I’d ever talked to my mom. She always gave me advice and looked out for me.

“Actually, no. She doesn’t want to risk having a bunch of people over who will destroy her house. Her parents would kill her. It’s just a few of us. We’re going to hang out and watch the ball drop. No big deal. She’s keeping it small.”

“That’s good. Sometimes low-key nights are the best nights.” She fingered through the rack of clothes again.

“Are you going to kiss him tonight? If you like him?” I grinned.

“Absolutely not,” she said pointedly.

“Why not? It’s New Year’s Eve. Doesn’t everyone kiss on New Year’s Eve?”

“Aria, one thing you should always remember is that you don’t have to do what everyone else does.” She pointed a finger at me and I rolled my eyes at her for the second time. “Even if I like him, I won’t kiss him tonight because it won’t mean much after only knowing him for a few hours.
