Chapter Twenty-Four
âMitzi, we agreed you would stay out of the Darkwoodsâ personal matters,â Alan said during our nightly video call.
Iâd made the mistake of bringing the photos up with him, thinking heâd side with me. Wrong.
âI will. I mean, I am.â
âExcept this one time, right?â Alan was sitting on the back porch drinking a beer. âYouâre there as a business coach, not to be their marriage counselor.â
âAlan, if youâd seen those photos, youâd also think something bad happened.â
âMaybe, but hereâs the thing, Mitzi. You donât know if thatâs what happened for sure. Youâre looking at a snapshot in time with no context and drawing a conclusion based on that.â
âAlan, do you honestly believe she was willing to participate with all those men?â
âI donât know her, but I can tell you one thing. Sex work is a big business worldwide. Thatâs a lot of willing participants. Has it ever dawned on you that they might have been role-playing? Weâve had our fair share of out-of-the-box fun. Remember that time we almost got caught andââ
âYes, I remember. No need to bring it up. So, do you think thatâs the reason? They were making a porno?â
âLook, Mitzi, everything youâve told me about this couple revolves around them living a fast and exciting life. Miles away from the average couple like us. They probably have a work hard, play hard mentality for life. Plus, theyâre loaded. People with money tend to do a lot of wild and crazy things we normal people donât experience. Didnât Timber mention they were a bit kinky?â
âShe said Peter was kinkyâ¦but she did say that with a smile. I suppose itâs not what I was thinking. But seeing those men surrounding her like salivating wolves waiting their turnâ¦disgusts me.â
âWhether thatâs true or not, itâs none of your business. Aside from Timber calling for help, my advice is not to bring it up and stop your snooping.â
âI am not snooping, Alan. Itâs a photo album. Thatâs what itâs there for.â
âYou need to steer this back to her career. This is about burnout. Thatâs what youâre there to fix. Do the job I know you can do, and come home when youâre finished. If Timber has extra baggage, they can find someone else to help them deal with it.â
I watched Alan drain the last of the beer from the bottle. He already seemed to move away from the topic of conversation, so I stopped pushing it. However, I didnât necessarily agree that this had nothing to do with her burnout. I think everything is connected. Itâs possible that this sex club, or whatever it was, could be connected to the breakdown in her career. Of course, the only way to find out was to bring it up with Timber.
âHey, howâs your boob? Has the bruising gone away?â
âMostly. Iâm not worried about it.â
Alan and I talked for a bit longer before ending the call. It was mostly me telling him about my trip into town with Jerome and how I had signed Timber up for a show.
