TWENTY-SEVEN

Tommy knew calling Skip had been a dumb move, but it also served a purpose: it told Skip and the cartel he was still around and still a threat. It might not be the subtlest of moves, but it put him back in the game.

Because Tommy had decided he was done running. Done looking over his shoulder. He’d already run out of money, with no real prospects of getting more. If he resurfaced using his ID and a real job, he’d be killed within days.

Not that a real job was in his thoughts, anyway. He’d been a petty thief his entire life. Yeah, he had a job here and there. Uber on and off. He’d once worked as a dishwasher for a long weekend. None of it really took, because he liked the action. The adventure. The thrills. The high from doing something illegal. Making money the easy way.

This was no longer the easy way, though. It was one thing to grow some weed in the yard or in the bathroom. Sell to the high school kids he knew. Maybe break into a car here and there and steal a radio or some loose change. Be the middleman for fenced goods on occasion.

But getting involved in kilos of drugs and laundered money? That was real jail time. Prison time. No passing go, no collecting two hundred dollars.

That’s why he’d reached out to the FBI office in Tampa, near where he was currently staying. By his estimation, he had no more than two days of cash left for the cheap hotel and some food. He’d figured out he didn’t even have money for a six-pack. He’d smoked all of his stash because he was so nervous.

What if the FBI simply arrested him? What if the Orenato Cartel had an agent on their payroll? He might be handing himself over to them right now.

He wondered if he’d called Skip to warn his old friend to get out, or if he’d told him he was going down with the ship, too? Skip wasn’t smart enough to understand Tommy was trying to help him. Tommy also had no doubt Skip had already told the cartel he’d resurfaced. It was what Tommy would’ve done in the same situation.

Not that it mattered. He was about to cross a line. He ordered another drink as the waitress passed by his table, hoping the FBI was going to pay for dinner. He had ten bucks to his name.

Tommy watched people coming and going. Happy families. Couples on dates. The Cuban restaurant was packed. He’d heard of it, only because there was a sister restaurant in St. Augustine he’d gone to a couple of times.

He watched as two men walked up to the hostess and looked around. When Tommy caught their eye, they started talking. One of them walked off but the other came to his table. He sat down and picked up the menu. “Great paella here.”

Tommy frowned. “You don’t look like an agent.”

“You don’t look like someone the Orenato Cartel would trust with any real information, but here we are.
