Harry brought me to his house. As soon as we got out of the car, we reached for each other, unable to wait another second. Our lips met, and Harry leaned me back against the car with his body, flattening his palms on either side of my head.

“Come with me,” he said, a little breathless. There were ten steps to the back door of the kitchen area, but we stopped in the middle to kiss again, this time laughing at not being able to get enough.

“I have to get home by five o’clock. And I have to walk. I can’t be late.”

“It will be fine. I promise. I’ll take care of you.” I wasn’t sure if I was comfortable with the sentiment at all—I was taken care of on a level Harry would never understand—but it was so sweet.

“Where is everyone?” I asked when we reached the kitchen.

“Most people have the day off. I was supposed to be in San Francisco. My dad is at a party. We’re alone.” My heart began to pound a little harder. “This way,” Harry said, leading me through many rooms. He stopped me under an arched doorway. “Okay. Close your eyes. Count to thirty. No, fifty.” He held my shoulders and waited for me to close my eyes, then he kissed my forehead.

“Fine.” I began to count. “One, two…”

“Slower.”

“Okay!” I obliged, laughing. I reached fifty. “Ready?” I asked, excited and impatient.

“Yes,” Harry said, sounding more serious.

I opened my eyes. In a vast living room, an enormous white birthday cake sat atop a low glass coffee table. The cake was covered with eighteen lit candles.

Harry took a seat on the floor. I crossed the large room and sat crisscross as well, facing Harry across my birthday cake. The candles glimmered between us, the moment suspended in time.

“Happy birthday, Poppy.”
