Chapter Twelve

Once I was finally allowed to leave Fate, I turned around and realized I was in a classroom. And by the looks of it, Geometry class.

Mr. Blacksmith stood at my desk, his face redder than a tomato. I smiled to myself, relieved to be back on Earth, but that giddiness faded when I looked at Mr. Blacksmith. “Could you explain to me why you think this?” He questioned. A few students giggled behind me.

What? What had I told him? Whatever it was, it was awful enough to anger him. I needed to say something, and quick. “Well, Mr. Blacksmith, I believe I’m certainly entitled to my opinions.” I stuttered. From the way his scowl intensified, I was pretty sure that wasn’t a good answer.

“Not at all, Lorienne Hall. You had the mind to voice your opinion, so explain to me why you think that this class is terrible, and you hate it, especially considering you’ve been receiving straight A’s this entire school year.” He raised an eyebrow, a sign that something bad was about to go down.

I could feel my face turning red. “Well, sir–”

“Lorienne, I’m going to ask you a question. Are you cheating in my class? If you can’t even answer a question about proofs, I am seriously concerned about what is going on behind the scenes here.”

My eyes bugged out and I shrank back in my seat. “Mr. Blacksmith, I can assure you that I’m not–”

“I find that hard to believe.” His mustache twitched. I was in deep trouble.

“I promise, sir! I’m not cheating!” I exclaimed.

Mr. Blacksmith let out a sigh. “You’ve already caused enough disruption in this class. Lorienne, please report to the principal’s office. I’ll phone her and let her know that you’ll be arriving. Astrid, make sure she reaches the office safely.” And with that, he turned away from me.

I slowly got out of my chair and left his room, tears pricking my eyes.

As I scurried down the hall, Astrid chased after me. “Wait!” she called. “Are you mad at me?”

I didn’t even respond, storming down the corridor. After a second Astrid seemed to get the point. “Look, Lory, I’m sorry. Honestly, I’m not really sure why I acted that way the other day. It was just, since you drowned, you haven’t really been popular anymore. Never really was in the first place.”

I turned towards her. “And you want to hang out with popular people,” I concluded.

Astrid swallowed thickly. “We can text every now and then, if you want. It’s just, since I’m dating Lukey and all–”

I cackled, leaning forward. “Really? You’re dating Lucas? Well, let me tell you something! He told me that he doesn’t even like you that much.” I crossed my arms across my chest. “He says that you’re annoying and clingy, and that he has someone else in mind. Besides, all I’ve seen on him lately is fawning over Katrina. Now please, tell me again about how you’re dating Lukey?”

I watched as Astrid’s frown deepened. Her eyes moistened, and she looked away.
