Chapter 19

Liz was reviewing the next day’s cases with Cherie when her phone began to vibrate. Liz picked it up and saw Lucy’s ring photo with her trademark red hair and incandescent smile.

“Would you excuse me, Cherie? I need to take this.”

“I think we’re done here,” Cherie said, inserting her stylus into her tablet case. “I’ll come back later if I have any questions.” She went out and closed the door behind her.

Liz smiled as she swiped across the phone screen. “Lucy! What’s up?”

“I hope I’m not interrupting anything important.”

“I was meeting with Cherie, but we were winding down.”

“Are you sure?”

“Lucy, you are the only person besides Maggie and my mother whose call I’ll always take. What’s going on?”

“I wanted to give you advance warning. Maggie knows what happened on the boat.”

Incredulous, Liz got up and stood at the window. “You told her? Why?”

“Because she asked.”

Liz closed her eyes and thought of Maggie’s face, that anxious expression she sometimes had when she thought no one was looking. She tried to be so brave about the cancer, so patient when Liz was late at work, or a family gathering was interrupted. She smiled when Lucy and Liz flirted, but she wasn’t amused. She was frightened.

“How much did you tell her?” Liz asked.

“The facts. I told her you kissed me. I responded, then broke it off.”

Liz whistled through her teeth. “Shit!”

“Exactly. But I wanted you to know before you got home.”

“Thank you for the heads up.” Liz pulled her duffle bag out of the closet. “What did she say when you told her?”

“At least one of us has integrity.”

“Ouch.”

“I’m sorry, Liz. She’s my best friend. I couldn’t lie to her.”

“No, I get it. Thanks, Lucy. You did the right thing. I appreciate the call,” said Liz, heading down to the shower.

“I love you, Liz. Good luck.”

“I love you too, Lucy,” said Liz, turning on the shower. “Don’t worry. I’ll handle it.” She ended the call and threw her phone into her duffle bag on top of her clothes. She pulled the scrubs top over her head and wiggled out of her shorts and underwear. She still preferred to shower in the morning, but since the pandemic had started, she’d switched to showering after work to prevent carrying the virus home on her clothes or hair.

From her days as a surgeon, Liz was used to taking quick showers. She could be done, including a hair wash, in less than two minutes. Being a Virgo, she’d even timed it. She was equally quick at dressing. A quick blow-dry, and she was ready to walk out the door. She unlocked the cabinet where she kept her gun purse and headed down the hall. Cherie was doing paperwork in the staff lounge.

“You okay for tomorrow morning?” Liz called from the doorway.

Cherie nodded. “Yes, I think I have it under control.”

“Call me if you need me.”

Cherie raised a thumb. “Yes, boss!”

As Liz started the engine of her truck, she wondered whether she should go directly home. She knew that one way or the other she was heading into a firestorm.
