2. Next, you’ll need to gather wood, three kinds: tinder, kindling, and bigger stuff. These should all have one thing in common; they should be dry. Any wood you collect should break easily; if it bends, it is too wet or “green” (that is, too fresh). The other thing each kind of wood will have in common is that you’ll probably need a lot more of it than you think!

3. Make piles of each kind of wood you collect. Your tinder pile should consist of stuff that catches fire easily but burns fast. Think dry grass and leaves, shredded dry bark, dry wood shavings. Tinder material is the firestarter that gets things going. After that, you’ll be needing small kindling; look for pieces of wood that range in diameter from mouse tail to pencil. Once you have the small stuff blazing, you’ll need bigger fuel to build a bigger fire; branches that are about the diameter of your arm will be ideal for that.
