Chapter Nineteen

Miller

I stood outside on the front doorstep, the sun just peeking over the horizon, when a familiar Jeep pulled up. Immediately, a grin split my face when I spotted the dark mop of hair exiting the door. And in typical Noah Matthews fashion, he looked more like a biker than a professional baseball player.

He wore a pair of dark jeans and a black t-shirt, even though today called for at least ninety degrees. His black boots thumbed against the gravel driveway as he made his way toward me, a sly grin on his face.

“Whose beautiful face has you smiling like that?” He asked, pulling me into a hug.

“Only yours would get me smiling like this,” I responded, clapping him on the back before letting him go.

Rolling his eyes, I led him into the house, almost everyone sleeping, for which I was thankful. Matthews was the star of the game right now, and I didn’t need the guys ambushing him before he had settled. And I didn’t need him to start making fun of me if he saw the way I stared at Valerie.

Leading him up to the second floor, I entered one of the empty bedrooms, only a few doors down from me. Looking at the empty room, Noah gave me a confusing frown.

“Guess I’m leaving. I only planned to stay if we were sharing a bed.”

Smacking him upside the head, the two of us chuckled, Noah tossing his bag onto the bed. He didn’t have much with him, considering he only had five days off during the all-star break.

Making our way downstairs, I was surprised to see people in the kitchen. And then I became stressed when I saw the dark hair starkly contrasting with the neighboring platinum hair. Of course, Valerie and Elena would be the first two to meet Matthews.

Turning around at our footsteps, Valerie sent a shy smile my way, whereas I don’t think Elena even noticed me. Her eyes were solely locked on Noah, her mouth slightly open. Chuckling, I decided not to say anything. Unfortunately, Noah didn’t have the same courtesy.

“You’re drooling a bit, sweetheart,” he teased, tapping the side of his mouth.

And if he had said those words to Valerie, I knew that adorable blush would be apparent. However, Elena and Valerie were opposites in many ways.

“I’ve just never seen an ego so big,” Elena deadpanned, drawing a bigger grin from Noah. And I knew that these two would be majorly butting heads by the end of his five-day stay.

“Noah Matthews. Known as the man with the biggest ego, among other things,” he smirked, reaching a hand out to the girls.

“Elena,” she said, gripping his hand firmly, refusing to back down.

Valerie caught my gaze, her eyes wide, my head shaking at the antics between two people that had just met.

“I’m Valerie,” she interrupted their stare down, reaching for Noah’s hand.

And when his gaze roamed up and down her body, I wasn’t proud to say that I immediately stepped in, wrapping her in my arms.
