As I’m sure you have discovered or intuited in your own teaching, asking adolescents to write on demand is rarely successful. Warming the waters by providing a rich context for writing is a much better strategy to get the best writing out of your adolescent writers, especially those with special needs.

Acronyms and Acrostics. Always remember to BID (Break It Down). It is especially important to break down complex learning activities like writing into manageable component parts for special needs learners. The special education teacher, from whom we can all learn, is particularly skillful at this process.
