Chapter 18

I drove Casey back to the office, and the truth was becoming uncomfortably clear—we had no leads, no ideas, and we were at another dead-end with Nelson. Every piece of information had turned into a false piece of data, every hint had been disproved, and every lead had turned cold.

When we entered the office and sat down, Casey offered her observations.

She was one of the most observant people I knew. Right from the start of the meeting, she was suspicious of Nelson. She was so sure he was lying. I agreed with her, but the thing was, we weren’t sure just which part of the investigation he was lying about. It could’ve been all of it.

As the morning ticked past, we threw around a lot of scenarios, trying to make sense of what Nelson and Kowalski were playing at. It was doing my head in, and at 11am, I could feel a headache coming on.

With every minute that ticked past, the pressure continued to build. At that moment, the case was looking like a dead end. We had no idea where Gemma Robbins could be, and it appeared, nor did anyone else.

And Gemma Robbins might’ve wanted it that way.

“I need some thinking time,” I said as I picked up my leather jacket from the rack near the door. “I’m going to visit Claire. Call me if you think of anything.”

Casey understood. It was frustrating, and the time was edging past, but if Gemma Robbins didn’t want to be found, we had little chance of finding her.

I made my way to my truck in the parking lot behind our office building. As I pulled out, I saw a possible tail. A dark sedan, possibly the same one from earlier today. Usually, I would try and lose them in the traffic, but at this point in the case, any hint would be good. If they were tailing me, then they must have a reason.

After twenty minutes in traffic, I arrived at the familiar parking lot outside my wife’s final resting place. As I pulled into the parking lot, the dark sedan continued on. I wasn’t too worried, though. It’d be back. I was sure of that.

I turned my collar to the damp air. There was an icy chill blowing through, perhaps there was late-October snow on the way. I looked to the horizon and saw the big dark clouds gathering. Winter was just around the corner.

As I walked through the tall iron gates, I noticed the cemetery was busier than usual, with most of the traffic centered around one particular section on the far side. There was a hearse nearby, and I assumed a new tenant had just moved in.

I used to hate this walk. I used to dread every second of it, but finally, after five years, it had started to become easier. No, easier wasn’t the right word. The pain was still there, the anguish was still inside me, but somehow, I’d found a way to manage it.

After walking
