When Folger left that evening, she retrieved the trunk from the cellar and carried it outside. She loaded it and the spade into a wheelbarrow and headed toward the woods. The moon was light enough to see where she was going, but not so bright that she could be seen by someone else.

Eleanor walked into the woods for at least a mile before finding a patch of level ground amid the dense trees. Dry brown leaves covered the land for as far as she could see. She moved aside a mound of leaves and set about to dig the grave. She worked slowly, still weak from her ordeal. The bleeding had finally stopped and her breasts were drying up. It would take a bit longer for her body to return to normal, but if she had her way Ernie would never see it anyway. The few stretch marks she had were going to be difficult to explain.

She stopped digging. What was that sound? She heard something.

In the distance, she heard it again. To someone not versed in country life, it would sound like a woman screaming in fear—like several of them. Coyotes! Eleanor dropped the spade and grabbed the handles of the wheelbarrow. She ran with a strength she no longer thought she possessed.

Once back at the house, she returned the trunk to the cellar and shut the door tightly. She would find another solution, but she wasn’t leaving her dead baby out there for the coyotes to dig up and eat.

After an hour, she could still feel her heart thump inside her chest. Her hands shook as she tried to drink a cup of coffee. What was she going to do?
