Sorel is still acting awkward and unnerved around me and I wish that he would stop. I want my old friend back and I just want to forget about the moment when he tried to kiss me. I want to go back to feeling like I have a brother who has my back, instead of feeling like I need to tiptoe around him. Between the tension with Sorel, and now the weird vibe that Iâm getting from Cornelis, I really just want to take Bridgette somewhere alone for a bit.
Thatâs why I agreed to go to the dragon cave with her. Itâs less about wanting to see any of the contents of that cave, and more about just wanting to steal away with her for an uninterrupted afternoon where I donât have to think about Sorel eyeing me or Cornelis eyeing her.
Since we are safe here in Cressâat least for the momentâI donât see any harm in taking an afternoon for ourselves.
When we get to the cavern, Bridgette jumps right in to show me all of the ancient writings on the walls of the cave, and the artifacts littered around the cavern floor that pertain to my very own legend. At first, I pretend to be flattered and fascinated. But in truth, it just feels strange to me. I donât want to relive my past or learn about the doomed history of my bloodline. I donât want to feel burdened by any of it. I have been burdened by who I am for my entire life, and now I just want to let it all go.
It doesnât take long for Bridgette to see that I would prefer not to continue looking at all the talismans and trinkets in the cave.
âIs something wrong?â she asks. âWe can leave here if this is too much for you.â
âNo, itâs not too much,â I say. âIt just reminds me of how cursed my path in this world is.â
âCursed?â
âYeah. Iâll always be hunted. And Iâm sorry for dragging you into any of this. To be honest, you would be far better off staying away from me and not being associated with any of this mess.â
âWhat are you talking about?â she asks. âIâm the one that sought you out, remember? And there is no way in hell that I can leave your side now.â
âSure you can,â I say in a weak attempt to push her away. I donât want to lose her, but I also donât want to put her in any more danger. âThis is a nice place here. If I left, you could stay here and live a happy life free from threat.â
âWhat are you doing? Why are you trying to push me away now?â Bridgette asks as her voice rises.
âI told you. I just want you to be safe and happy.â
âWell, I donât care about being safe. And I could never be happy again without you,â she says. Her eyes look like they are sparking and even her human nostrils are flaring. âDonât you see? I love you, Edric.
