By the time we returned to the camp, Sybil had retaken her place within the circle, leaving us alone to speak with Gideon.

“I’m telling you, something’s not right here,” I demanded for the hundredth time—at least that was what it felt like to me.

“Just because a few plants have a slight glow doesn’t mean the portal is leaking magic into our world. And it certainly doesn’t mean that Sybil is hiding anything.” Gideon met my determined gaze with one of his own. “Lily, remember, I’ve been in your world a really long time, and if something this dangerous was going on here, I’d know about it.”

“Okay, well, just because you’ve been in our world for a while, doesn’t mean you know everything…” My words trailed off, uncertain how to fight his unflappable logic—because he was right.

As a powerful fae, if anything was amiss with the portals around the world, surely he would have felt it.

“Then how do you explain this?” I gestured to the mushrooms on the table, still wrapped in Bennett’s shirt.

Gideon bent down and inspected them again. “I honestly don’t know.”

“Well, great. As usual, we’re still in the dark.”

Bennett’s head snapped up at my statement. “Wait! Maybe that’s it.”

I spun around, anxious for his revelation.

“In a forest this dense and dark, sometimes organisms can develop a bioluminescence all on their own.”

“I don’t know what that means,” I admitted.

Bennett shrugged. “I’m saying, the glowing could be a natural occurrence.”

I gazed back at the pile of shrooms and hoped he was right. Because once again, I prayed a witch didn’t have anything to do with what was really going on.
