DAYS LATER

Shayla’s door opened when Bernice toddled inside. Shayla was under the covers, lying on her side, back faced in her direction. Although Shayla hadn’t bothered to look her way Bernice knew she was up and that was all she needed to speak her mind.

“I know you’re awake, Shayla, and I know you still hate me although I hate it so much. You don’t have to talk. I have something to say.” Tears poured down Bernice’s face. “I want to apologize for ever allowing someone to come between us. Nothing means more to me than you.” She paused. “And I want to thank you for…for what you did in—”

Shayla glared her way. “Don’t say what you’re about to say.”

“I’m sorry…I…” Bernice sat on the edge of the bed and touched her leg softly.

“When I first came into that apartment we lived in, I begged God to give me a sign that my life wouldn’t be so bad. That my life wouldn’t stay so terrible, Shayla.” She wiped the tears away with both hands. “And then you were so nice to me. You made me feel like everything was going to be okay. And then what did I do?” She took a deep breath. “Betray your trust by being Ajax’s spy. He’s never did anything nice for me and I hurt you badly.” She paused. “And I hope you will forgive me.”

Bernice stood up and walked around the bed to see Shayla’s face clearly. Her eyelids were pressed together and it was obvious she was doing her best to fake sleep, just to avoid Bernice. “Is there anything I can do to show you how sorry I am, Shayla? Anything I can do, to make you forgive me?”

“No,” she said under her breath.

Bernice inhaled. “I heard your bathroom got fixed. Can I use it?”

Shayla shrugged. “I don’t care what you do.”

“Okay, I’m going to leave you alone now. Just wanted you to know that I love you.”

When she tottered into the bathroom and shut the door, Shayla opened her eyes and looked at the door before closing her eyes again. Silence filled the space and then after several minutes she heard a thump.

At first she didn’t move.

But curiosity won her over and she shuddered toward the bathroom, opened the door and stumbled backward. Bernice was hanging from the shower rod, eyes open, tongue hanging out the side of her mouth.

She committed suicide.

Shayla passed out.
