She laughed again, only this time she groaned at the end of it. “Oh, how true. I have known many an hour with my father where that was the case, or a gentleman in the ballrooms of the town when one would pay me attention.” Her brow scrunched in contemplation. “They do like to keep talking about themselves, don’t they?”

He laughed too. “Yes, they do. I hate to admit it, but gentlemen do like to hear themselves talk. They accuse ladies of such a thing, but it is not true at all. They will go on and on, determined to show everyone what they know. They don’t even realize they’re doing it.”

“Yes!” She blinked. “That is exactly it! How are you so aware of this?”

He lifted a hand and lightly touched her cheek. “Because I like to listen and catch people out. The best thing you can do is be silent and allow people to make a fool of themselves,” he said.

Her brows rose. “My goodness. You are quite vicious, aren’t you?”

“Only with people who drive me mad,” he assured. “I try to be gregarious when possible, but there are some really impossible fellows out there.”
