Chapter 8

When I arrived back at the shelter, I took the dog Hap had rescued into the hospital, where I found Lilly chatting with a woman who’d brought in two pug puppies for their shots. When she noticed I had an injured dog in my arms, she motioned for me to take him into Exam Room One. I settled him on the table, giving him a treat for being so patient, and Lilly came in a few minutes later.

“So, who do we have here?” Lilly asked.

“This is a stray Hap found in the alley behind his store. We don’t know if he’s lost or abandoned. Hap wrapped his leg and gave him food and water, but I wanted to have him checked out before I settled him in the shelter.”

“Of course.” She began unwrapping the leg. The dog flinched, but he didn’t snap or snarl as many dogs would have. “So what have you gotten yourself into?” she asked the dog as she finished removing Hap’s bandage. She frowned when she saw the deep gash. “He’s going to need stitches. I’ll need to shave the leg and clean out the wound.” She gently poked at the leg. “I’m going to put him under so as not to cause him undue pain or discomfort. I’ll probably keep him here in the hospital overnight so I can keep an eye on him.” She took out a light and looked into the dog’s eyes. “You can just leave him with me. I’ll text you later and let you know how he’s doing.”

“Okay.” I ran a hand over the dog’s head and down his neck.

“You said that Hap found him. Has anyone reported a dog fitting his description as missing?”

“No, but I’m going to put his photo and description on the web page and in the newspaper. He’s pretty scrawny, so I figure he’s been on the road for a while, or he was neglected by his owner.”

Lilly lifted his lips and looked at his teeth. She ran a hand over his thin body, pausing to push gently in a few locations. “It does look like he’s been on his own for a while. And I agree that he’s at least ten pounds underweight for his size and he’s missing several teeth despite the fact he’s a young dog.”

“So maybe we don’t want to find the owner.”

She paused, putting her stethoscope on his chest. “I suppose it’s possible he ran away, and the reason he’s so underweight is due to his being on the road for an extended period, but my guess is that he wasn’t given proper care in the first place. I know it’s the shelter’s procedure to look for the owner, but if an owner is found, I’d like the chance to speak to them before he’s returned.”

“Of course. I think that would be a good idea. It would be better to find him a new home than to return him to an abusive or neglectful home.” I looked the dog in the eye.
