Hills on the Road to Selkirk, Present
Brian lay trembling in the cave, trying to stifle his breathing. From outside came the soft sounds of Simon pushing through the woods.
âBrian.â The smooth, evil sound caressed Brianâs ear. âYou canât fight a wild boar alone.â
Brian held back the nervous giggle that welled up in him. The man was an idiot. There hadnât been wild boar roaming this area for centuries. The sides of the small cave closed within inches of his round body. The air came to him in hot, stuffy gasps. It had once been larger, archaeologists believed, but a cave-in many years ago had destroyed much of it. He wished, irrationally, that it was still larger, even as he reprimanded himself that it made no difference.
It did, he thought. If it were bigger, he could hide in a shadow. He could at least move, strike out, in some way. As it was, he was wedged on his stomach, his face inches from the cover of foliage that hid any sign of the entrance, even more defenseless than he would otherwise be. He wondered how crazy the man really was.
He tried to quiet his mind, to push aside his fears, to focus, to listen. Outside, he heard a squirrel chattering, but no more sound from Simon. He tried to think. The man thought he was a medieval knight. That was grandânow how to use that?
A bird cawed outside.
His left leg began to itch. The rich smell of decaying vegetation filled his nose. Still searching for an answer, Brian pulled out his phone, checking for any response from Angus. There was nothing. He looked again and saw why: his phone had no reception here in the cave. He shoved it in his pocket, frantic!
He was alone with a madman, and no thought how to use Simonâs insanity to help himself. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to think of something, to think outside the box, to think what a man who thought he was a medieval knight would do. He saw nothing but black behind his lids. In the dark, the smell of hot, moldering leaves grew stronger. His right leg began to cramp.
A twig cracked outside his hiding place. He held his breath. Simon couldnât possibly know about this place!
The foliage lifted. Simon peered in, black eyes glittering in a snakeâs version of mirth.
