I wandered into the kitchen and smiled at Mom, who was dumping some frozen chicken tenders onto a cookie sheet. She was concentrating so hard that she didn’t notice that I’d come in. I bumped her with my hip, and she whipped her gaze up to smile at me.

“How are things going down there?” she asked as she pulled open the stove and slipped the tenders into the oven.

I sighed as I opened the fridge and pulled out a bottle of water. After I took a sip, I twisted the lid back on and set it on the counter behind me.

“Mrs. Jordan found some old games Dr. Peterson left behind. But most of them are missing quite a few pieces, so they are getting creative.”

Mom laughed, and I reveled in that sound. She had a way of putting me at ease when I was stressed out. And there was no denying that I was stressed out. The fact that Noah, Evan, Liam, and Grayson were taking turns patrolling around outside didn’t make me feel any better as darkness came over the town. All of them had been pretty tight-lipped about what was going on and why we were on mandated lockdown.

But I had to believe that something was up, and I was choosing to put my trust in them. After all, what other choice did I have? We’re talking about mystical creatures that currently lived in the woods that surrounded us. When it came to determining who was at a disadvantage, I’d say it was the humans.

Mom set a timer and then turned to face me. She got her we’re going to have a serious talk look, and I fought the urge to sprint from the room. I wasn’t sure what I could tell her, but I was pretty sure that Liam didn’t want me spilling his secret.

But with the way Mom was staring at me, I was beginning to think that there was no way I was going to get out of this conversation. I was going to have to give her something.

“What’s up?” I asked as I very awkwardly hoisted myself up onto the counter and sat there. I reached over, grabbed an apple, and took a bite. I needed something to do, or I was going to melt under Mom’s scrutiny.

She studied me, slipping chocolate-covered raisins into her mouth. I knew she was working up to unload on me. I’d lived with her long enough to know when she was calculating in her mind. And right now, she was trying to figure out how to lay the smackdown.

“Want to tell me what’s going on?” she finally asked after she took a sip of her Diet Coke.

I took a big bite of apple and then used that time to figure out what I was going to say. When I swallowed, I didn’t feel any better. I was still at a loss for what I should say.

So I decided to stick with ignorance.

“I’m sure, whatever is going on, Liam knows what’s right.
