Chapter 17
âThe tunnel back home had that metal frame across it,â Moses stepped through the false wall, into the portion of the tunnel only seen by magic users. He then quickly stepped back. âSee,â he said, âNo big deal, we can come and go.â
âWe didnât get trapped on Mars until the rabbit,â Stella Kate said.
Eleanorâs cheeks reddened at the memory. âOh sure! I levitate one little rabbit and never hear the end of it! I promise not to levitate anything,â she said.
âYou levitate anyone who needs levitating, Sissy,â Hazel Ruth admonished. âI say we risk it. Itâs the only way we can ever get back into the tunnels back home. We canât stop the Dragon Queen from doing whatever it is sheâs doing if we canât get to her.â
The four agreed as they stepped across the threshold into the secret portion of the tunnel.
As they walked, the lights began in the ceiling. Akin to those on Mars, these seemed dimmer, as though in disrepair. The tunnel walls on Mars had been made to appear somewhat like naturally occurring caves, these tunnel walls were more like the pyramid above. They had sharp, angular corners, rather than organic, flowing curves. There was no grass, only stone. With the glow from the ceiling the tunnels looked very industrial.
âThis is certainly different,â Moses tested the echo, âHey!â his voice reverberated and echoed down the corridor. As the echoing stopped, they heard a scraping noise further down the tunnel followed by several clicks and clacks, like fingernails tapping on a desk. Then silence.
âBurn it!â Moses whispered. âSorry.â
They all stood motionless, trying not to breath, listening for more sounds. They heard nothing. No clicks, no clacks, no scraping.
âWell, something is down there, and it knows weâre here,â Hazel Ruth said flatly.
âNo, it only knows that someone is here,â Stella Kate responded with her typical plucky resolve. âWhatever is down there has no idea whatâs coming.â
âRight,â Moses said. âItâs us, weâre the ones coming, or going. Traveling?â Moses muttered under his breath, his thoughts trailing off to embrace the semantic equation of who, really, was in the tunnel.
