AN HOUR or so before dusk, the caravan pulled into a great fenced yard outside the city. Lyuc came around back and shooed Yan out of the wagon. “Unhitch Bryn, please. You can wipe him down a bit, but you don’t have to worry about brushing him. He’ll get plenty of attention at the stables tonight. I’ll only be a few minutes.”

After tossing Yan a rag, he closed the door and left Yan to do as he bid.

“Looks like you’re to be pampered tonight,” he said to the horse as he unhooked the shafts and undid the buckles around his chest. He murmured soothing senseless words to the beast as he rubbed the sweat and dust from his coat, and the horse whickered and nuzzled his cheek in response. “I think he’s going to pamper me too. He’s a good one, your master. He won’t let me get lost in this overwhelming place, right?”

The horse lipped his ear, and Yan laughed. “Thanks.”

When he looked up, Lyuc stood a few feet away, watching them with soft eyes and a broad smile. He had the ugliest carpetbag Yan had ever seen draped over one shoulder, but when Yan offered to carry it for him, Lyuc shook his head. “I have it. Come on.”

He turned and started walking toward the open gates, but Yan said, “Wait. What about Bryn?”

Lyuc blinked at him for a moment before he chuckled. “Right. We need to lead him to his room for the night, don’t we? He certainly can’t take himself there.”

He laughed again as he came back and took the horse’s reins, and Yan cocked an eyebrow at him.

Lyuc shook his head, and his smile turned sheepish. “Sorry. I’m a bit distracted. It’s been a long time since I was near this many people at once. Like I said, I completely understand your trepidation. It takes a bit of getting used to.”
