“Lady Alice, thank you for seeing me.”

When he lifted his head, Simon could not help but smile at the young lady, taking in her wide eyes and the pink that had risen to her cheeks. Clearly, his visit had been something of a surprise, but thankfully, it did not seem to be unwelcome, given the smile edging across her lips.

“I am glad to see you recovered. Please, do sit down. You too, Lord Larbert.”

“I thank you.”

Doing as he was bidden, Simon sat down quickly, glad that the strength of body he had found had lasted this long, though it was already beginning to weaken. There was a quiet tremor to his frame and, as he let out a breath of relief when he sat down, he caught the way that Lady Alice’s eyes settled on his.

“You are still fatigued, I think.”

“I am,” he agreed, not at all embarrassed to admit it. “But I am not unwell, or in pain, and for that, I am grateful.”

She nodded, rose, and rang the bell for tea, glancing at the maid who sat in the corner of the room, next to the open door.

“My mother will be sorry that she has missed you both. In fact, I am not certain that she will believe me when I tell her that not one, but two, gentlemen called upon me this morning!”

With a quiet laugh, she sat back down, and Simon could not help but smile at the sound. It was gentle, warming him through, and as he gazed back into her eyes, Simon’s heart began to yearn for her closeness… and he did not push such feelings away.

“I wanted to reassure you that all was well,” he said, quickly, “and to state that there is nothing about this for which I blame you. I do not think that this had anything to do with you, and I am truly sorry for having to step away from you as I did.”

Lady Alice shook her head.

“Please, do not apologize. I understand that you had to remove yourself from the dance at once.”

“But I left you standing there alone, and I am sorry for that.” With a shrug, he smiled at her. “It was unavoidable, but I would like to dance with you again.”

Much to his surprise, instead of appearing at all pleased by this, Lady Alice’s eyes flared, and she looked away.

“I – I am not certain that such a thing would be wise, Lord Sedgewick. After all, in the two instances where we have stood up together, you have been taken ill, and I must believe now that it is a deliberate act that has caused this.”

The door opened, the tea tray was brought in and, as Lady Alice busied herself with that, Simon let himself study her. Her dark brown eyes had been filled with worry, her lips flat and her face a little pale when he had mentioned dancing with her again. Obviously, there was a great concern there, and it was not one which Simon wanted to ignore or brush off.
