But This Is

the Role

Jay’s always

made me play.

I’ve known him

since we were eight years old.

Back home,

he was the clown.

The guy everybody knew

or wanted

to get to know.

I was his

less-interesting friend.

A quiet guy

whose name

didn’t stick

in people’s heads.

Back then it didn’t bother me.

Jay pushed me out

into the world.

And I kept him

grounded.

We were in perfect balance.

Until we were stranded

on this island.

I’ve Been Working

on getting us rescued.

Jay thinks

all we have to do

is wait.

He’s convinced

that rescuers will be

on their way any day.

They’re probably just trying

to pinpoint our exact location, he says.

Don’t worry so much, man!

I wish I could believe that.

But when I think about

The Vanishing Place,

I’m afraid to wait.

We have to

keep ourselves

active.

We have to stay

in control.

My first plan

was to write

S.O.S.

in the sand.

I convinced the others

to help me

carry big rocks

from one part

of the beach

to another.

But within a day,

a strong tide came in

and covered it all in sand.

My second plan

was to build a huge bonfire

out of dried coconut husks and palm fronds.

The blaze was huge

but short-lived.

The dry husks burned too quickly

and the smoke trail disappeared.

Sometimes it almost feels

like the island

is sabotaging my work.

But I can’t start

to think that way.

Or I will lose my mind.
