I last saw Adam in December 2018, just a month before his passing. By then he was extremely frail and had been diagnosed with a terminal condition, but he managed a scone and a small bowl of soup at his favourite café, near his house on Deeside. With us was another of his friends, Mick Marquiss – himself a renowned and highly respected birdwatcher. We chatted for a couple of hours about digitising Adam’s snow-patch observations. He was full of ideas and chat. He also had the same beaming smile and glint in his eye as when I met him all those years before at Glenshee. As I left that day I wondered if I would see him again. I am glad that our last meeting was a happy one.
