When she awoke again, Elizabeth smelled the aroma of a large breakfast and the more appealing scent of warm blood.
She opened her eyes briefly, then closed them as the memory of the day before returned.
Mr. Darcy was a vampire. He had turned her into a vampire. It was ludicrous to believe the conversation that had passed between them. Surely this was a bad dream; caused by her illness and a fever.
And yet, the thirst for another goblet of blood burned in her mind.
Mr. Darcy was in the room with her, she could sense him. If only he would leave and allow her to gather her thoughts, she would take a goblet and soothe herself.
Trying to ignore her thirst was beginning to cause her physical pain.
She heard the sound as he stood and moved away from her bed.
He said not a word, and his movements were almost imperceptible, but she could hear them. Soon he opened and then closed a door on the far side of the room, and she was suddenly alone.
Elizabeth wondered for a moment if he sensed her desire for solitary reflection, but that thought was quickly pushed aside for the goblets sitting on a table beside her bed. Goblets. There were two. Had one been for him?
Carefully, she moved to the edge of the bed and took one of the goblets, her hands shaking as she brought it to her lips.
Ah, yes. The warmth and the tangy taste was delicious upon her tongue. Elizabeth drank too quickly and nearly choked before coughing to clear her throat.
The effect of the blood upon her body was immediate. Her pain abated and she placed the empty goblet back on the silver tray while eyeing the second one hungrily. Mr. Darcy would not care if she drank it, of that she was certain as the warmth of the first goblet moved through her body.
There was no denying that she enjoyed drinking blood. Her mind might refuse to accept the fact that she was a vampire, but her body held no such reticence.
Her body wanted blood; it needed blood.
She remembered the stories she had heard as a young girl about vampires. They needed fresh blood to sustain them.
Elizabeth stood and took the second goblet in hand as she walked over to the drapes that covered a window. She remembered how the light had hurt her eyes the day before.
If she meant to escape Pemberley, she would not be able to do so in the light of day.
Sipping leisurely from the goblet, she moved slowly through the room. The furnishings were heavy wood and the draperies and bedding more masculine than what would be found in a ladyâs bedchamber. It was plain that this room belonged to Mr. Darcy. And yet, she felt safe there.
The light from the fireplace was not bothersome to her eyes, and Elizabeth was drawn to a looking glass hanging above the mantel. She wondered if more vampire lore held true as she moved to stand in front of the glass.
