Chapter Thirty

Turbulent Feelings

Hestur went airborne, and the force of his jump launched Sigrid upward so hard that she separated from his back. She clung to his mane and clamped her legs tighter.

The deck rushed toward them.

They hit the moving surface.

Hestur jerked to a stop, and she lost her balance.

Sigrid hit the deck shoulder-first, a pained gasp wrenching from her. The crack of her helmet rang in her ears a second later. The world spun, and her stomach roiled as she tried to get up. We made it?

Fisk’s voice bounced around the tunnel. “Hold on! The waves might push us into the walls.”

Hestur’s hooves clattered away across the wooden deck. He blew his nostrils, making that saw-like sound.

Get up. Locate Garmr. They weren’t in the clear yet.

She sat up, fear for her companions overtaking the urge to squeeze her eyes shut and roll into a ball. Garmr’s huge body covered the mouth of the passage, swirling like a fire caught in the wind as he tried to follow them in. His booming barks shook the tunnel walls.

Mariam appeared at Sigrid’s side, holding her arms as they fought to stay still against the high swells carrying the ship onward.

“We’re almost through!” Fisk shouted. “The passage widens ahead.”

The current pushed them steadily into darkness, until the hellhound turned into a yellow flicker that grew smaller and smaller.

“Slow. Take it easy.” Mariam made a distressed sound when Sigrid tried to stand. But the shaking in her limbs was so bad she couldn’t get her feet under her. Why had she wanted to ride into danger like that? What was wrong with her?

She was beyond lucky to have made it away from that monster alive. But Hestur…the whites of his eyes showed, and he kept pacing the deck. That had probably given him a permanent fear of fire.

“Hestur, I’m so sorry,” she croaked.

Mariam helped Sigrid to her feet, and Sigrid leaned on her, unable to walk without the support.

Panting and sweaty, Sigrid made her way over. Her eyes welled with tears as she took in his blowing nostrils and sweat-soaked neck.

“He’ll be all right,” Mariam said. “I think he’s mostly worried that you fell off.”

As if to confirm this, Hestur bumped Sigrid’s chest with his nose. She wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in his mane. She clung to him as he danced sideways, letting herself be dragged across the deck. “We’re okay.”

“By golly, you got us through!” Fisk said in his usual chirpy tone. “Your plan worked.”

Sigrid didn’t want to hear it. She’d nearly gotten everyone reduced to ash. “I shouldn’t have put Hestur through that,” she said into his mane. “He trusted me, and I failed him.”

“You didn’t fail him.” Mariam settled a hand on Sigrid’s shoulder and squeezed. “You led him into battle like a valkyrie, and he came through. He’s doing fine. Look.”

Sigrid peeled her face off Hestur’s neck. Sure enough, his ears were perked, and though he was catching his breath, his eyes were bright.

Like a valkyrie.

Was that what being a valkyrie was like? Pure terror?

Sigrid rubbed her arm.
