Chapter 25
George parked the car, and we agreed to go for a coffee at the café in the square.
I was still angry. He kept apologizing, but it wasnât enough. It would never be enough. Thereâs no excuse for such behavior. People always have a choice. The argument that you made me do it is bullshit.
We ordered coffee and took a seat.
George stared at me across the table, but I couldnât meet his eyes yet.
âAs Iâve already told you, the last thing I remember is me dancing with Nasos. We were talking. He was already drunk, and he came onto me. I told him I wasnât interested, and then he gave me a drink as an apology.â
âThat was nice of him,â George said and sipped his coffee, the contempt in his voice obvious. He adjusted himself on the seat. Something about this conversation was making him uncomfortable. âMaybe you drank too much. Does alcohol affect you like that?â
âI didnât have that much.â I didnât want to tell him about my anti-anxiety medication. These conversations had three possible endings. The first would be advice to quit the drugs because theyâre bad for me, and I seem fine. The second would be a discussion of whether Iâm crazy or not, and the third would be people sympathizing with my problem. These kinds of chats ended with me looking bad, so I wasnât interested in opening up further. âJust tell me what I did at the party.â
âYou danced with everyone. You teased everyone. You were loud and annoying people.â
âOkay, then what?â
âThen you asked me where the bathroom was, and I lost you for a while.â
âFor how long?â
âI donât know.â
I leaned closer. âThen?â
âThen I saw you sitting by yourself, looking around. You seemed quite wasted. I asked you if you wanted a ride home. You told me you had already arranged it. Then something got your attention, and you just left.â
âDid you see Nasos during the night?â
âI saw him dancing with you. Then, honestly, I wasnât paying attention to him.â
âWhere did they find him?â
âNear the back corner of our house is a shed where we keep gardening tools. I have no idea what he was doing over there.â
An image of the interior of a wooden shed came to my mind and made me lose my breath.
âIs your shed made of wood? With a lot of empty shelves?â
âActually, yes. Have you seen it?â
My stomach filled with acid. I felt like I was suffocating as if there was no air coming or going from my lungs. I had to keep it together, though. My hand shook as I tried to drink water. I donât recall going to the shed at all.
âI toured your house when I first arrived. I was as curious as everyone else.â I lied. âDid you hear anything about the murder weapon?â
âThey were looking for anything that could be a weapon. They told us to evacuate the house, so we spent Sunday and Monday at a hotel. I donât think they found anything. Unless they did find something and didnât want it leaking to the press.
