The walk back to the castle is strange. Elsie feels uncomfortable being outside and so open to attack, and Dayle is so quiet that the silence feels more awkward than companionable.

“Dayle, do you want to go back? Do you want to punish them? Will it help?”

Dayle kicks at the grass and then kicks again and then picks up a handful of rocks and throws them as they walk.

“No. Not really. I’m so angry, I feel cheated. Why realise after I left, after Joey left? Why drive your children away and then realise what ass hats you’ve been? Why didn’t they change for us, when we were still there to enjoy it, to forgive, to mend? I’m angry.”

“I get it. I think you should be angry. But you’ll get over it. If neither you nor your brother were enough to make them change, then they don’t deserve either of you. They’ll live alone and sad and die alone and sad. And I won’t let you dwell on them. But I am queen, so if you want to punish them, then I can.”

“Thank you. I enjoy having a queen for a friend.”

“I enjoy having a pirate queen for a friend.”

“Do you want to come down to the docks? I need to get word out about Hardy; get people looking for him and find out if he’s left Allaire.”

“Yes. I feel safe with you. Nervous. But safe.”

“I promise you – if Hardy tries to show his handsome face now, I’ll murder him with my eyes shut.”

“It would be easy for you.”

“It would. I have been in too many fights. I’m quick and my instincts are good. We’ll take a few soldiers with us, but I promise you, Hardy won’t hurt you while I’m by your side.”

“Thank you. And have I convinced you to stay here? Or is it too much with your parents still here?”

“I’ll feel bad about them for a while – I won’t be able to help it; like picking at a scab, even though you know it will hurt, and even though you know it will bleed. But then I’ll forget them. I’m good at pretending everything’s all right.”

“I don’t want you to pretend. It’s important to me that my subjects are happy. Dayle, I want you to be happy.”

“I know. You’re sweet. Probably too sweet to be a queen. But then if I stay and join your council of esteemed guidance givers, I can look after you and stop you being a pushover.”

“I’m not a pushover.”

“I think you could be. If you’re not careful. I can help.”

“Please help. You could live at the castle and marry Finneas and have little soldier babies.”

Dayle scoffs. “Soldier babies.”

“Yes. Soldier babies. Think about it.”

“You really want me to stay. To give up being the pirate queen?”

“You’ll always be the pirate queen, but you could retire. Just think about it.”

“I am.”

The noise of the docks makes it harder to talk, but Elsie is happy to watch Dayle. She has such confidence as she approaches
