Willen awoke in the Silverward the next morning, disoriented and confused about what had transpired the night before. In the next bed over slept Aiden, his skin still glowing from the spectral burns that he had suffered, and by his side sat Darrick, dressed in ordinary clothes instead of his usual Ildarguard attire. Turning to his other side, Willen found Geonis resting in the nearest bed, though his eyes were open and staring right back at him.
âLet me guessâCynders?â Willen managed, his throat both parched and sore.
âYeah,â Geonis grumbled. âI really wish theyâd stop pickinâ on me. Did they get you too?â
âI guess so,â Willen replied, increasingly bitter as memories of the attack finally began to trickle in.
âWillen Osombra,â a dour voice called out from the Silverward entrance. It was the very first time Willen had heard Delaniya Brent say his name, and so many chills did it send up his spine that he genuinely hoped he would never have to hear her speak it again.
âPrincipal Brent,â Willen managed in response.
âI was hoping you could tell me what exactly you and your little friend here were doing at the old Freeman place last night before the fire started. I have to assume it was very important, considering you missed both your lessons yesterday and somehow managed to convince Aiden to miss one of his lessons too.â
Sheer fear alone compelled Willen to respond with the truth, even though every fiber of his being fought desperately for him to start off with a lie or clever quip. âWe were just readinâ some old newspapers,â he confessed against his will. âWe wanted to know what happened back in Silvermarsh a few years ago.â
âOh, really?â said Delaniya. âAnd did you happen to find what you were looking for?â
âNot really,â Willen answered.
âHow unfortunate.â Delaniyaâs eyes then narrowed as she studied Willenâs sour expression. âYou know, it really is a shame how quickly old places like that can burn down when thereâs no one around who cares enough to take care of them. By the time we got there, most of the house had already been reduced to cinders and ash, although we were fortunate enough to retrieve the two of you and your satchels before any permanent harm was done.â
âWere you able to save any of the papers?â Willen asked hopefully, sitting up despite the crippling pain all over his body.
âWhat exactly do you think burned first? It certainly wasnât the foundation,â Delaniya replied, her patience wearing thin as Willen collapsed back onto his pillow and cursed the Cynders who had attacked him.
Looking over toward Darrick, Willen paid no attention to the resentful glare he received in response. All he cared about was the answer to one burning question: âSo, did you guys actually catch âem?â
But it was Delaniya who answered instead, saying, âNot quite yet,â before shooting a sideways glance in Darrickâs direction.
âWeâve got a bunch of Ildarguards out there lookinâ for âem right now,â Darrick said. âIncluding Ella Brent.â
âAnd I am sure this
