CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Silas couldnât erase the smile from his face as he headed back home. Kayla accepted Christ! That meant that they were no longer unequally yoked, according to Godâs Word. But, unless she decided to join the Amish church, there would be no hope for a marriage between the two of them. Would she even consider it?
Jah, sheâd joked about marrying him and having bopplin, but would she ever really consider it? He sure hoped so, because after that kiss, he couldnât imagine not having her in his life. Ach, sheâd felt so wonderful in his arms. Heâd never realized just how much heâd missed having a woman in his life.
After he left Strider in the barn, he headed to the dawdi haus. He surveyed the small living area, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom, remembering the wonderful moments he and Sadie Ann had spent there as husband and wife. Sheâd only been gone two years. In one way, it felt like just yesterday sheâd been in his arms. In another way, it seemed like a lifetime ago.
He thought of the day heâd come home from his construction job two and a half years ago. Sadie Annâs secretive smile told him something was going on, but heâd been clueless. He closed his eyes, recollecting the precious moments.
âGuess what?â Sadie Ann said.
Silas grinned. âYou made my favorite meal?â
âNee.â Sheâd come close and pressed against him, then whispered in his ear, âDaed.â
It had taken a couple of seconds for the word to register. He stepped back, her hands in his, and studied her face. Sheâd been glowing. âIâm going to beâ¦you areâ¦you are in the familye way?â
She smiled and nodded.
âAch, this is the best news!â He bent down and kissed her, his hand resting on her flat stomach. âWe have a little one in there right now.â He didnât know if heâd been trying to convince himself of the fact or if he was just overwhelmed with awe. Perhaps it had been a little bit of both.
He couldnât help it when tears surfaced. A boppli. A testament to their love.
A knock on the door from the main house snapped him out of his reverie. He realized he had tears in his eyes, even now. He quickly erased their existence, then opened the door.
Paul stood on the other side, a goofy grin on his face. He waltzed in and closed the door behind him. âAlright, bruder.â He plopped down on Silasâs loveseat. âSpill it.â
Silas shook his head. Apparently, his brother was not going to give up.
âCome on. Every last detail.â
âIâm not telling you anything,â Silas insisted.
âAch, so there is something to tell! I knew it.â
âNee, thereâs nothing to tell.â
âRight. Thatâs why a twenty-minute round-trip took you two hours.â His knowing eyes demanded truth. âIâm wondering what you did with the other hour and a half.â
âI think your mathâs a little off.â
âMy point is the same.â He crossed his arms firmly over his chest.
Silas shrugged nonchalantly. âWe talked.â
Paulâs brow shot up. âTalked, huh? And thatâs it?â
âNee. We prayed too.
