When Camilla entered the bar, the loudness of all the competing sounds from the packed crowd was deafening. The Metallica junkie DJ was back. The sound system was cranked so high that the speakers rasped and crackled, making James Hetfield’s voice barely recognizable. She threaded her way through clique after clique of drunken tattooed people, searching for Taylor. It was suffocatingly hot with all the people jammed in. Camilla wished she hadn’t worn her suede coat. What was the point? To show Taylor that she could? Or to show Audrey she could be cool? She was sweating. Her black T-shirt would show large spots as soon as she removed the coat. Her skinny jeans and her combat boots weren’t helping. Someone grabbed her sleeve. Camilla turned. Audrey was there, holding an empty round tray between them like a Greek shield. She was wearing a small white T-shirt with a black-and-white photo of the eighties girl group The Runaways on it, a black velvet miniskirt with a studded belt through its loops, and her black high tops. Her bare skin everywhere brought Camilla back to Taylor’s bedroom.

“She shouldn’t have called you,” Audrey shouted in her ear. The metal tray pressed against Camilla’s abdomen.

Camilla pulled her face away. “Did she leave?”

Audrey shook her head. Leaned in again at Camilla’s neck. “She shouldn’t have called you. I gotta go.”

Camilla watched as Audrey tackled a nearby table, letting one of the women yell in her ear what all seven of the people wanted. Or at least the woman tried to. The rest of the table kept shouting out what they wanted.

Camilla found Taylor on the same stool as the night before. It was like something out of that movie Groundhog Day where the same thing happens over and over. Would the three of them repeat it all? Go to Taylor’s. Get into bed. What if they did? Would Camilla do that again?

Taylor was dressed in a pair of white jeans and a fitted white western shirt with metal snaps on two pockets across her chest. Leaning fully over the bar, she stood up with her flip-flops planted on the stool’s side metal rungs. She was talking excitedly into the bartender’s ear, who was leaning over toward Taylor, both forearms squarely on the bar. Maggie had been one of what Taylor called her detox flings: twenty-eight days and it was over. Like all of Taylor’s exes, they’d remained friends. It was Maggie who allowed Taylor to smoke in the bar, although even she drew limits when the bar was so packed.

Camilla was surprised to see there was an empty stool next to Taylor. When she got closer, Taylor glanced sideways and, throwing an arm around Camilla’s shoulders, forced Camilla to bend into an uncomfortable position over the bar top as well, as if she was going to make her kiss it. Taylor gripped her shoulder. Then, she slid down onto her stool, releasing her clutch. Camilla felt immediate relief, no longer in that horrible bent-over position.
