The stranger blinks at me. Or at least one eye does. The other hides behind the bandages: white strips wrapped over not just the left eye, but also the forehead, temples, cheeks, jaws, chin, and nose, with an opening for the nostrils… The only other part of the face they don’t cover, aside from one eye, is the lips—thin, chapped ones.

“What the…?” I start to say. The stranger’s lips move at the same time mine do. But I don’t hear another voice, only my own.

The person appears to be staring at me through a rectangular opening in the wall above the sink, looking out from another bathroom. The rectangle cuts off anything below the elbows, but I can see that the person is wearing a T-shirt like mine—same color, same font. Only it says something different:
