“FELIPE RIVERA, A NEBULA SPY?” Sailor paced the length of Lani’s veranda. “I cannot believe it.”

Cruz couldn’t either. Felipe was a friend. And a good guy. Or so he’d thought.

After the spy had left the laundry compartment, the four of them had hurried back to Lani’s cabin to discuss what had happened.

Lani glanced at Cruz. “Your mystery friend did say, ‘the spy is closer than you think.’ You can’t get much closer than the boy who lives next door.”

“And Felipe is into spy gadgets in a big way,” reminded Sailor.

“You’re sure it was Felipe?” Cruz pressed his roommate. “I mean, if he had on a cap and night-vision goggles, maybe—”

“These weren’t our Academy standard-issue goggles,” broke in Emmett. “I could tell by the shape they were the new OptiTek 5000s. Felipe got them for Christmas. He’s very protective of them. Wouldn’t even let me look at them.”

Even Cruz had to admit that was some pretty good evidence against Felipe. Still, he wanted to be positive. “We should start feeding him some false information and see if he passes it along to Nebula,” said Cruz.

“We’re going to the Taj Mahal this weekend,” said Lani. “We could try some misdirection. You could tell him you’re going to see relatives in…I don’t know…Madagascar?”

Cruz liked that idea. His travel would not be considered unusual. The explorers were allowed to leave the ship occasionally on weekends to visit friends and family. They had to have permission from their parents and Taryn, of course, who required the particulars of where they were headed, who they were staying with, and when they’d be returning.

“Be sure to say it’s your mom’s relatives,” added Emmett. “That’ll really keep Nebula guessing.”

“It’s a good start,” said Sailor with a mischievous grin, “but turnabout is fair play, too.”

“What do you mean?” asked Cruz

“She means we should spy on the spy,” said Emmett.

“We could use my acousticks if you want,” said Lani. “We could hear him from inside my cabin, no problem.”

“I could hack into his OS band and tablet,” volunteered Emmett. He tapped the corner of his glasses. “And from our veranda, my magnification feature could come in handy.”

“Cracker!” exclaimed Sailor. “This is going to be great.”

Cruz wasn’t so sure. Misdirecting Felipe in order to throw Nebula off their trail was one thing, but snooping into the lives of the other explorers? That was entirely different. Cruz leaned against the rail. He looked out at the silvery blue ocean. A half-moon glowed pale gray in the sky, its reflection on the water lighting a path for Orion to follow. It also lit up the ship’s observatory. Someone had come to stand at the curved window that jutted over the stern. It was Bryndis. The moon must have caught her attention, too.

“Cruz?” Lani was next to him. “Something wrong?”

“I was…wondering,” he said. “If we use your acousticks to eavesdrop on Felipe, won’t you hear the conversations of other explorers, too?”

“Yeah, I guess…” She lifted a shoulder, as if to say that was the price that had to be paid.
